Default Radiator source

A friend of a friend needs a new radiator for his 1989 928 S4 Automatic. Anybody know of a good source?

I had to replace the rad. in mine a few years ago. When I checked the price on a new one I almost had a seizure.....
Go to a GOOD local radiator shop, and get them to build a replacement......

I had a new one made, (with all the correct fittings, and a trans. cooler - just like stock) but with a 1" thicker core, for under $300.....it has been in the car for 3 years now and works just fine........

The "aftermarket" and "competition" radiators are very nice and work well, but why spend the money if you don't have to..?????

The most common failure is a cracked tank and we sell a replacement for $95.

The stock radiator does has problems with cracked tanks, which lead to various contamiants getting into your coolant (either tranny fluid or oil)....a good local radiator shop could build a good radiator, or Devek makes a really good one, which is still cheaper than a factory unit!

Are you really serious? You had a shop build one for you and it works really well? For 300 dollars?

Hmmm. I'm in southern CA - I should be able to find a place around here....

I see lots of US adverts for radiators for US 5 litre cars in the 200 to 400 USD range, so what is the reason that woud make a 928 radiator to be 4 times that price. low production volumes and low profile maybe would add 50%, 100%? Aluminium construction maybe adds x%?

Mine is currently leaking from between the side tank and the core, I guess the rubber O ring is shot.
Local radiator shop will attempt a repair although they are nervous about the aluminium fittings for the tank.
I just have to take it out
I read all the advice on this, looks straightforward. I will probably undo the oil pipes at the motor end and take them off the radiator when it is off the car to minimise the chance of damaging the oil cooler Anybody done it this way?

Marton they are rigid. Much easier the other way, but should work.

Yes, actually, I am serious......

Mine was old and tired - fin damaged, partially corroded, etc, etc....I took it out of the car, took it to a radiator shop (in Petaluma, Ca. - I was living in Sonoma at the time, this was 1997)
asked them if they "could make a new one just like that"....auto trans cooler and all, but with a 1" thicker core.......and was told "no problem......2 days"...and it cost somewhere around $300.......
...like Marton said, it is just a radiator................

PS...I had posted Santa Rosa, after thinking about, I realised it was Petaluma.....(it has been a while...and this getting old business really sucks.....)

Yes, it looks almost identical to some of the Mercedes Benz radiators for the 1997/2000 model C200s which sell for around 300 or 400 USD.

Brenden, could you ask if they also incorporate a heat exchanger for the IC or is there a reason why you would want to keep that as it's own separate unit?
