keep in mind tha tthe cams are not manufactured "perfectly", neither is the belt ... that is why the holes are "slotted" in the first place and adjustment is required to set cam timing

two valve cam timing is less sensitive as the valve curtian area is considerably less on a two valve and early cam timing is just not as critical.

I'm guessing that most of the slop is in the belt and engine assembly tolerance.

I do have a backup plan, which would allow the pointer to be adjusted to a specific cam using the WSM procedure (not by bending the tip!). From that point, the pointer should always be true to that cam.

I'm was going to wait and see how the fixed pointer measures up on a few engines first, unless the potential buyers, above, demand an adjustable pointer. Buyers?

Picture of a complete setup. I just brazed a small tube with a bend to the end of the dial pointer

Holy crap Ken, aren't our engines gonna look funny with two of JohnV's monstrosities sitting on them?

Window is in; expecting snow here, this weekend.
...

heinrich,

Especially on the 16V!
...

Someone will hopefully use a setup like John Veninger's crafty device to verify my gizmo!

My 32V pointer will look something like the 16V pointer below, but will be cut from one piece of stainless sheet metal, and have markings in an arc, where only a sharpened tip shows zero at present.

I would guess to be accurate you need to do an initial measurement of the 32V cam timing using the factory process ("my" tool) to set Ken's tool. Kind of a calibration.
Then you can make adjustments using Ken's setup without taking the cam covers off.

Default more and more measuring...

A more rational (and accurate) composite drawing:

curved lines are angle measurements

Default Post 1500!

Small notches on tip indicate advance/retard, larger notch is zero:

Very nice Ken... so, you have done away with the holes that were used to zero the pointer? How would one double-check alignment?

Default Code name: "The Sickle"

Sharkskin,

Good eye!

I was happy enough to get the tip holes to work! (There is a severe learning curve on my part.) Yes, there will be notches on the circle to locate the tip, which is currently 6 degrees from zero.

I may try a seam in the straight section, or increase the width and/or thickness of the sheet metal, to reduce the chances of accidently changing the measurement, also.
...

Randy V, John D,

Thanks for the status reflection!

Default Garbage in, garbage out...

I guess I was a bit tired last night when I did the arm. I used the wrong hole through the gear.

The arm will not be that long!

But you get the idea.

Nice... hey, question... With a code name of "The Sickle"... if you don't move enough of these, would that be considered "sickle sell anemia"?
