Hey guys, I was watching some high end car auction from Arizona last night and had an idea. Ya know thw chrome trim around the headlights on the earlier 928's? I have always thought that that chrome against the paint looks great but it always seemed out of place because there isnt anymore of it on the car..... Well How about this? I was looking at the old gull door mercedes when I got the idea. I have all of the aluminum window trim off of the car now. What do you think about chroming all of it before I reinstall? I think it would look good against the silver and would give it a "classic" look that you wouldnt be able to put your finger on. That woulod include the windshield, both doors, quarter glass and hatch. I think that would look really nice. How about some of you?

I too have thought of this but I think chrome is associated with a sedan rather than a sports car. I think it might make the 928 look like an old mans car. I would love to see it done to form a solid opinion but my gut says no. What about a powder coat close to the color of your car?

Some will say chrome has no place on the exterior of the 928, others will disagree. Personal choice. I have the H4's, so no chrome ring around the headlights, but I do have chrome door locks. They evidently were chrome in 78? I bought both NOS locks on Ebay a couple of years ago. Some chrome on some 928's (especially silver) will look great.

I think you'll find the trim ring around the headlights is in fact faux chrome plastic. I would really like to see someone strip all the paint and polish the aluminum in true Porsche racing tradition. Or how about buffing it up to aircraft quality bright??? Hmmmm? Too much time on my hands.

Chrome plastic, metal whatever hahaha no way I'm polishing all that stuff. Thats why I was thinking about chroming it match the rims and the headlight rings. I know it woulod look newer and more modern black but I think chrome would make it look more like a classic kind of look like all the old cars merc, vettes, all the 60's muscle cars ect. and against the silver it wouldnt be too loud. Although I think it would look great against red too haha

What about painting the head light trim rings to match the color of the car. has anyone done that?? Pictures would be nice.

The guy who appraised my cars ( for insurance) took a long second trip around the '80 - and then a third trip. With a puzzled look, and a smile he noted that in all his experience of evaluating speciality and collector cars - he had never seen one with zero chrome. We filled in the form, "chrome condition - N/A ", and share a smile over that uniqueness whenever we meet.
No chrome is already unique, a satin sheen trim would blend well with silver, and a chrome could be absorbed by silver - although a little bit on the 'bling' side. Before changing anything, I'd want to see some photoshop work, because the perceived size of the glass openings and their relationship to the body may change if the flat black trim is changed.

Well, let's put it that way: They made it black, so it would blend better with the glass area. If you make it chrome, it will stand out and clutter up the look.

More is not always better - in many cases, less is actually more. The exterior of the 928 is a good example.

PS: I think that chrome looks best in combination with dark colors - combined with silver there are two colors/materials that are too close and competing.

Upgrade those headlights to 8 inchers (H5s are fine - H4s twice the price) and do away with the silly stove top burner trim rings.
