I owned an '82 model in '84. I knew nothing about the car and was at the mercy of the dealer. I didn't know it had a timing belt. It cost $300 just to open the hood. A tune up and front brake job cost $1,300. Now, having manuals, doing as much wrenching as possible and relying on the internet for parts and knowledge makes owning my dream car (x2) affordable. I look at 928 ownership as a hobby - sometimes expensive.

My car is a daily driver and I think that if you stay on top of the maintenance curve and drive the beejeezus out of them they return many smiles per mile and don't cost much to keep running. Doing your own work is a must however. Like Joe said earlier, pretty nice looking old cars as well.

My new boss said he'd buy lunch if i'd drive. He got in the car (knowing how much I make BTW) and says "so how the hell can you afford a new Porsche? Did someone die and leave you a fortune?" This about a car that is almost old enough to drink. Yee haw. When I told him that is was an '87 he was shocked. IMHO the question should be how can you not afford to drive a 928!

My 89 was a cheap purchase (nothing else came close for the money) and has been economical as well as fun for the last 4 years and 65K miles I have owned it.

Cars are "bad" investments in the first place! Look at it this way, a 928 is going to have a lesser depreciation curve that a newer vehicle and have significantly less insurance and registration costs.

Example: I came very close to buying a 2004 VW R32 (very nice car!) before I got my 928 in august, but it was $30K, costs probably $300 a year to register, & $1200 a year to insure...with depreciation of 10% per year (very optimistic estimate) it costs $4500 a year + interest! My 928 costs $300 a year to insure (full coverage) and about $75 to register (custom plate surcharge) and might depreciate $1K per year....or $1375 a year so that gives me $3125 a year for repairs and maintence to break "even" 10 years from now that R32 will probably be worth $5K tops ($25K loss), whereas my 928 will still be (at worst) 1/2 of what I paid for it! Not a bad investment (compared to other cars)

$300/year for full coverage? Where do you get such a deal? Is this a collectors insurance with a strict mileage limit?

Nicole, My 90 model only costs 500 a year as a second vehicle. I am insured through Wawanesa. I am restricted to 5,000k a year but it was only a hundred more for no limit.

Hmmmmmm,

Q: Um can you afford NOT to own your 928....?

A: NO...

Q: Why?

A: Don't feel like spending 250k for a new Ferrari 456/575

Q: But your car is only a Porsche?

A: But your Ferrari is only a subsidized Fiat..!

Q: You crazy?

A: No, Ask the Agnelli family, and see what they say..

Q: So, Can you afford your 928?

A: Yes, besides, no price on love...

Nicole is moaning because she has so many violations that her insurance has gone through the roof. You can admit it to everyone here, Nicole. Tell everyone what a leadfoot you are on Hwy. 101.

LOL! I have no violations on my record at this time! In fact, for the only ticket I got in more than five years (October) I have not even received a notification from the court. I guess they are writing so many tickets, they can't keep up with processing them.

Lead Foot? Hmmm... "yu kno, offiser, ai sought ai was drraifing on se autobahn"

My sum total expenditures on 928 payments in 2004: $0.00

My sum total expenditures on 928 repairs in 2004: $79.00 [inner door handle, fog light switch]

My sum total expenditures on 928 insurance in 2004: $760

That works out to $859. Plus whatever gas it used in 5000 miles, and two oil changes, figure $20 for each. By the way, my car is now 20 years old.

Huh; in another thread they are talking about what pieces of **** 928's are/were~

YES I can afford my 928!

N!

My insurance is just slightly less than $300 per month.
Can I afford the car - Hell no (well almost with doing all the work myself). Will I ever get rid of it - Never, my favorite car I have ever owned easy.
I am planning for when I can afford a second one - once this one is near perfect and has a Supercharger installed.

Happy New Years ALL - off to spend the evening with my family - fondue and movies.

Nicole
I have my 928 listed as a "pleasure" vehicle on my standard insurance, techinically its listed at 3,000 miles per year...but they do not check it.... I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap it was to insure, I was expecting about $600 a year...but I got a substantial discount for having two (perfect record) drivers and three vehicles.... I have Mercury insurance, which is the cheapest I have found & they have great customer service too....I had a honda stolen a few years back, I figure it was worth about 11K....they gave me 13.9 for it! Plus they have this 100% satifaction guarantee, like all repairs that they pay for are 100% guaranteed for the life of the car (while you own it of course)...so if the paint fades in 5 years...they will fix it for free! Take a look

Just about three years ago I purchased a 1983 928S with 89k miles. It was a rare color, zieglerotmetallic, and the paint looked great...on the headlight buckets.

I like how enthusiastic I sounded at the time. Seemed like a good deal, lots of mechanical work done, strong engine, new BW gearbox, new carpet, excellent seats, bought it for $4800. Five thousand dollars later and I managed to sell it for three hundred bucks less than I paid for it.

God I loved that car.
