Anyone know of a cheap way to ship wheels with tires? The normally cheapest shipper I've used, Greyhound, wants $44.50 to ship one 16" phone dial with a mounted tire from Michigan to Washington (state).
Cheaper ideas anyone?

Dave,
Try UPS with one front and one rear wheel set tie-wrapped together, 2 seperate parcels, right and left. No box needed. I think this is similar to how Tirerack and 928 Spec sends theirs?
You can get cheap ratchet straps at ACO to use as the tie wrap, or find someone with a plastic binder.
Hope this helps...

UPS will accept a non-boxed package? News to me....but I'll check it out. Anyone ever done it this way...what did it cost? UPS is usually the most expensive.

Well Dave,
I've never shipped non-box personally but have recieved non-boxed tires from Tirerack via UPS.
UPS might be not be too bad as you overall dimesions should keep you in the lowest weight class (50 lbs?). Shipping to Washington state is the farthest zone, so yea, that could run a premium. Worth checking into...
btw, this is off the top of me head.
Get your package dims based of the two wheels shipped together (then 2X for the right and left). Get your zip codes and goto UPS.org and calaculate shipping costs.

Cut a piece of cardboard for each side of the wheel and tire, tape it well with strapping tape... My 4 16" wheels and tires were shipped from Ohio to NC for about $95 by UPS (wrapped separately).

I've always found UPS to be reasonable, but I have daily pick-up and spend about $600.00 a month with them. You don't need to wrap the tires, just wrap a piece of heavy packing tape around them wide enough to place an address that's clearly visible.

Dave ... check DHL for that shipping method if you can use hard wheel covers like wood only. Their handling is the very worst in the world, I have NEVER sent or received anything by them that was not damaged.
