ATF fluid resonance
Had a major mechanical overall carried out around 12 months ago and the following comment was made in the report "suspected ATF fluid resonance (in ATF cooler circuit?) " I was advised to monitor and report back. Mechanic is ex main dealer and has an outstanding reputation. Was wondering what causes resonance? is it a big problem?

Could be up there with left handed hammers and the like! I can best describe it as a resonnating hum at tickover - though not at all times. Some sort of vibration through transmission fluid? Car has 64k miles and has good history. Only done 10k in last 5yrs though with previous owners - suspecting lack of use?

Resonance in fluid hoses is not unknown - there is a WSM note that if you get noises from the auto box (3 speeds?) alter the hose from box to steel line from short to one with a loop in it. It can also occur if the hose starts to delaminate internally. Also the pump will make very loud noises if its supply hose gets restricted and the pump cavitates.

Hi,
Bert - jp has put it up accurately
As well, these transmissions perform very well with Castrol's "Transmax Z" synthetic ATF. It works wonders in very cold climates (and very hot too like here in OZ - 35C here in the Tropics today) and is less prone to many issues common with Dexron 3 fluids. Low fluid level will likely cause cavitation too
Regards
Doug
