Default Mysterious tinkling sound

When I'm rolling slowly (15 mph or so) next to a Jersey barrier, I hear a tinkling sound (like somebody is stirring a drink). It's dependent on car speed, not engine speed. I haven't been able to figure out what is tinkling. Any clues? BTDTs?

Thanks.

Check the bolts on your CV joints. If possible, get the car on a rack and have a listen. Also, it could be the center caps on your wheels. Or a zillion other things.

A similar noise that kept me looking a long time was two heat shields above the exhaust system clattering away - now what a Jersey barrier may do to that noise ....
On the lower probability side, I've seen seperated bits of parking brake shoes that noisely bounced around in the rear drum.

Check the inside bottom of the wheels for rocks and stones living there. Been on a gravel road lately?

Is it a rhymic "tinkle, tinkle, tinkle" or a jangling "tinkletatunka tinkatonktinttunk toonkatinkatinkle"?

Check for pranks. Take off your hub-caps and look for rocks. Damn Hoodlums!

Check all your wheel center caps. If you have the metal type, they sometimes don't fit 100% snug.
I've got this same issue on my 993.

Simply tap each center cap with your finger and the loose one will identify itself.

If you have the plastic type, then I doubt its a center cap issue.

hhhmmmmmmmmmm... Hub caps. Now why didn't I think of that... I better check mine when I get home. Anyone know how to get 'cup-style' hub caps off? Anyone?

Is the noise like tinkling on a flat rock or in a bucket? Sorry... couldn't resist. Check for a small stone/pebble in the vent section of your rotors. I had a simular problem. Turned out I picked up some very small stones in the rotors. Drove me crazy (crazier?).

the hubcaps don't always sit snugly and will click. Goes away above 120, so no problem.

Don't know what you mean by "cup style", all the centercaps are the same irrespective of wheel, as far as I know. Some centers do not have the two small holes in them (my C4 wheel centers for example) so they must be removed by pushing them out from the rear of the wheel hub, necessitating removal of the wheel from the car. Most I have seen have two small holes in them that you can insert a tool of some sort (I use two heavy paperclips bent straight, with a short right angle on the end. Insert in hole and pull straight back).

A couple of the older painted center caps I have fit loose, but they don't make any noise......I did notice a clicking noise once under the same conditions that MB mentions, it turned out to be a loose lugnet, allowed the wheel to flex a bit......and Yeah, Bill....the sound went away above the legal speed limit.....Then all I could hear was those voices in my head..........

I think I've found the problem. Loose center cap crests. A little dab o' superglue oughta fix it. Thanks for all the sage advice and raillery.
