Default sloppy rear shift coupling

hi,

I found the rear selector rod coupling on my car to be sloppy. After searching hte archives and various tip sites, I've read that they are like that even when new.

Why?

Can I get a replacement somewhere that is nice and tight?

Nice and tight isn't always what's good for you. This being one of those cases. I believe there is some play in it on purpose. It protects other places in the selector and gearbox internals.

there is a small bit of for and aft built into the plastic bushings but should be no side to side. It was deliberate but I have not seen a Porsche explanation of why. You can find 911 designed replacement plastic bushings with no slot just a round hole. I recall someone tried them but went back to the correct parts.

I have seen each of the parts in the whole system and can't see what the big deal with less movement is.

The front ball cup can be a hiem joint or similar, and the rear can be a universal joint with no movement. That and a shorter shifter would be nice I think.

Did you check the bushings in the coupler to see if you have BOTH of them?

The transmission has shift forks riding in grooves. Try pulling or pushing gently on the shift lever at highway speeds, and you should be able to feel slight vibration as you put pressure on the shift forks.

If the linkage has zero free play, there is a very good chance that you will be putting continual pressure on the shift forks and sleeves, with resultant wear.

Not worth it, in my opinion.

Wally,

I've been wondering about that "vibration". I've also noticed that this vibration is more pronounced when applying slight "forward" pressure when in 4th gear and not so pronounced when slightly pulling shifter while in 5th. Otherwise, I can only feel "noise" when just resting my hand on the shifter (in all gears).

In fact, the vibration I've noticed in 4th almost feels like some sort of unbalance. Is this normal?
