I agree with George....the 89+ cars had the lower rear end and revised gearing in the auto that gave better low end accleration. Also the 89+ had the digital dash & the 10 speaker stereo with the 6 channel amp (older was 8 speakers and 4 channel amp), the 90+ cars had airbags...the GTS are pretty much the same as the 90+ cars on the interior.

Really any 87+ car is good, the GTS are the best but also the most expensive...if you do a few mods to any 87+ car it will perform like a GTS or better and be cheaper than a GTS.....I would start scouting cars in your price range, don't be in a hurry...just wait for the right car

Here are a few I remember...

88: 3-point belts in rear, horn emblem embossed on steering wheel horn button

89: new instruments with digital readout, improved electrical systems overall (e.g. electromagnetic door locks, revised alarm, and improved turn signal switch design where reset function lasts longer), extended hub steering wheel no longer available

90: first year with airbag. Revised dashboard and center console, with metal bezel covering the vents under the windshield. Knee bolster on drivers side, instead of parcel tray. Glove box door with shock for soft, Lexus-like opening

91: Improved sound insulation (-3dB/A), revised manual shifter and parking brake handle, HVAC with smog setting, steering with more power assist, better engine compartment light, screwdriver in tool set changed to red,...

92/93: hatch opening switch on passenger side deleted

94: pollen filter

Where there any 90 and on without airbags? I hate airbags.

Airbags where standard on 87 - 89 944turbos in North America, but it's very common for Canadian and Euro cars to not have them. Same with 928's???

Nope - all 928s for the North American market had Airbags from MY 1990 onwards.

What is so bad about airbags?. One big reason why I upgraded from my first 928 - an '88 - to a '91 was the added safety in case of a major colission. These cars are pretty fast, so I'd think you want maximum protection - no?

You can see a slightly enhanced '91 interior here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/170073-928-interior-decorating-and-improved-shifting.html

If you don't want airbags, you can pick up nice '87 and '88 S4 models with automatic for under $12k . Manuals are usually a little more expensive, and if they are in superb contition, they are worth a premium also.

Best of luck!

Nicole, I received severe chemical burns and some mild cuts and bruising from a airbag going off at relatively low speeds (50-ish) with a 1/8-1/4 mile uncontoled roll after I was knocked unconscious by the airbag. I have disabled the airbag and warning light on my SAAB, and if my 928 had an airbag I would do the same. Airbags do more harm than good. They cost an insane amount of money to build and install, are an ecological disaster (and you complain about catalytic converter?!?!), cause physical harm and even death when activated, and due to political pressures are not an option for any decent new cars.

Last time I checked, the over 100,000,000+ airbag-equiped cars in this country have saved <10,000 lives, paralyzed >5,000 (in non-life threatening accidents), and killed ~1,000 (in non-life threatening accidents). If everybody bought SAABs, Volvos, BMWs, Porsches, and Audis; airbags would not be necessary and more lives would be saved.

Thanks for all the info Nicole!

regarding Airbags:
1: Have you ever been in an accident where the airbag deployed?
2: Have you ever seen the harm a deployed airbag can cause to human flesh?
2b: Especially when wearing glasses/sunglasses...
3: Have you ever seen airbags in a professional series race car????

The difference between a crash test dummy and a human is that humans brace themselves for impact and dummies don't. A properly functioning shoulder belt should stop your head from bashing the steering wheel. If you are awake and able to brace yourself, you will not lurch forward.

The way I see it, I am more likely to be awake an bracing myself in a head on crash, then not. Odds are nil than I would be passed out and limp at the wheel, requiring extra protection from hitting the steering wheel. Therefore, I would rather NOT have an explosive device 2 feet away from my face, that would wind up doing more harm than good.

I have a very strong personal feeling that airbags are nothing more than a marketing tool. People feel more safe and secure in a car with airbags, and therefore auto companies install them as standard so customers do not think this car is less safe beacuse it doesn't have airbags. look at all the new cars coming out with airbags installed on every inside surface of the car. I'm positive it's a marketing stragety more than a safety feature!!

Those '85 - '87 euros that weren't ordered with upgraded multi speaker stereo still used old style door panels even though seats were later style. In '88 we got later panels as standard also. Car in picture is '87 S4 5sp. It has 12 way heated seats for driver and passager including seat memory for both sides yet has old style door panels.

As for the airbags. I blame YOU, yes YOU.

Not any of you personally but US public in general and your Department of Transportation particularly. Since you were stupid enough NOT to use normal seat belts your stupid DOT made it mandatory to have large sack of gas explode 200 mph on all our faces. Idea was that they would catch large male driver who was NOT wearing seat belt before this idiot hit his head to steering wheel. First airbags were real killers. They might have saved someone in really bad crash but probably killed more people (especially petite females) in slower speed accidents. We in Europe got same technology some years later. Luckily modern bags are smaller and deploy more slowly. But still entire western world suffers from these eighties and nineties mistakes. AFAIK all airbaged 928's have these monsters and not later design much safer bags.

Hmm. Sorry Erkka. I was reading page 1. Agree wholeheartedly about airbags.

My 90GT does have the tray under the dash. If I have the upgraded sound deadening, the early cars must be really loud. I think the GT for 89-91 didn't get the better insulation. 89 is the first year of the digital dash. Franky, I could do without it. Maint cost can be breathtaking. I think all the speakers in the post 89 cars look ludicrious. And, they don't work worth a spit. My favorite is the 87-88 S4 interior with a medium color like tan, or gray to compliment the black dash, black door panel inserts, inner quarter panels, etc. I also absolutely love the 79 op-art car(see Chuck's time piece photos).

Air bags on all 90 US cars. They are the first generation style with the higher explosive discharge gas. Apparently, the designers were not familiar with ordinance chemical systems, and forgot about the adiabatic effects, oops. Second gen bags came out in 1998. I'm glad you complainers are alive to complain. Although the law prohibits a shop from disabling an air bag system, there is no law against the owner doing it. NO kids in the front seat!

We've had this speed debate before regarding the late cars. I won't beat that horse.

Another rarely seen, or talked about, option, were the fabric panels in the seats, instead of the full leather interior.

I got lucky, in that when my wif found out I was interested in owning a 928, ( timing was perfect here ) I owned one, in about a three month period, and she and I had a WONDERFUL weekend driving Rosy home!!!!!

An early '87 S4 auto ( last 4 VIN # 0203 ), with the fabric inserts in the seats, the first tank of gas got us 20.something MPG, the second tank got us 21.7 MPG, and the third tank got 22.4 MPG, even through the W. Va. "mountains"! And I was keeping the shark rolling around the 85 MPH mark, the whole time I was driving ( my wif failed to watch the speedo enough, and had Rosy up to 95 once, w/o realizing she had gotten so FAR out of "reasonable"!!!!! )

Rosy is the second Porsche I have ever owned, or driven.

I am pleased with the stereo system, once I got the in dash unit replaced with a working unit, deleted and removed the factory "amplifier", I've thought about getting a lower rear drive gear set, I've attended a DE, and found those aren't for me, I like the under dash trays, as there is so little interior storage space, but they do interfere with foot action, and I can see what large footed people see in their deletion ( I wear size 9's... ), I agree with Iceman; Take your time, find the one that suits YOU! Some of my criteria; No black, red, white, or silvers. No white interiors, and light ones are suspect, where I work, I can get FILTHY at times..... I passed up a BEAUTIFUL medium blue one in Texas, because it had a white interior. And definitely, find a Knowledgeable person, who knows 928's, and have a GOOD PPI done on your choice! Your desires will probably be different from mine. And don't forget the "rare" flip-up wing, for mostly '87 only? And only the early ones at that?

Did I manage to answer all the questions?

Oh, and don't forget the full leather interiors, versus the partial leather interiors..... Vinyl dash's for one....
