Red face Do Not Try This At Home (Idler Roller)

First, the good thing that came of this. An easy way to change the Idler Roller (P/N 928.105.57) is to do as listed in John Pirtle's timing belt change http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/ with a little addition. Put the idler arm in the freezer overnight before you put the new roller on. It slides on the spindle easily.

When the roller stops at the edge of the spindle, you still have to get it down the shaft a little further to be able to get the circlip on the end of the spindle. A good way to do this is with a large socket (my 1 1/4" fit perfectly) and a large C-clamp. With this setup, you can put the socket inside the roller and push on the socket with the C-clamp. The socket pushes the roller down from inside so you know when it stops, that's as far as it needs to go.

DO NOT use a piece of wood or something else to push the roller on from the outside when it stops at the edge of the spindle. It won't bend the outside of the roller, but you can't tell when to stop pushing and the outer roller can slide off the center of the bearing assembly. Then you might try to use a puller to make it all better and bend and/or score the roller's outer edge. This causes the price of your $70 roller to suddenly jump to $140 (ask me how I know this).

A friend of my dad's suggested freezing the arm, and what a nice and easy job it made of this task. He also suggested freezing the whole assembly to get the roller off, but I didn't try that since it was easy to pop it off with a hammer the first time.

Yep, BTDT.
