Richard I have to say I really admire your attitude and obvious love for your 928 . Very happy to have had the opportunity to meet you in person at Sharktoberfest and share that enthusiasm. I need to start driving the very brown 1980 again I have wimped out for a car with a heater these last cold days. Good part is it feels so good when I get back in it !!

I had the opportunity to speak with Greg Brown about this type of failure and his opinion is that the hub 928 105 459 00 (spider gear) is the cause of this failure which he has observed on three occasions. He then stated that his has found 12 more cracked hubs prior to their complete failure during the course of doing timing belts. Just some additional observations and an opinion.

Of the 200 plus timing belt jobs we have performed, we have only seen one spider failure, although many rusty. And it may have been our own doing as it need to be removed "aggressively" with a puller.

Hi Everyone,

Well after long last, and some concern on having to build a new engine for Christmas, it is with great joy, and extreme pleasure that I say the following:

NO BENT VALVES...!!! CAR IS BACK ON THE ROAD, DRIVES BETTER THAN BEFORE..! Well, I've been driving my other car for the past 6 weeks+, so maybe I'm just happy to be in the shark again.

It does idle a lot smoother, ad is a bit zippier than before... But, my memory could have faded, and I could just be a happy gluckschwein...!

Thanks everyone for all the help...!

This is great. Where did you get the cam?

Thanks H,

Brendan,

I got the cam from Jim B at 928 International along with a cam gear and new woodruff keys...

FYI,

The cam turned a bit, rotated the woodruff key, broke the spider, and then snapped off as in the pics prior. Just a few mils or less, and presto, new engine...

Now I can still make the claim that the motor's never been apart, as the heads have not been off...

I am a happy Sum Beach...!! Just what I asked Santy Claws to deliver...!

Richard:

I'm very glad to hear about the happy ending. Happy Holidays!

Can you explain the failure mode? I don't quite follow the chain of events in your message to Brendan. What is the flaw that starts this?

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the kind words... Happy holidays to you as well..

As far as what caused the sequence of events to occur, I am not sure. I described the chain of events after the tech and I chatted for a little bit. We both agreed that the description seemed logical.

As far as what started the chain, I am still trying to figure it out myself. One thought is that dirt got in there after 18 years of fun, some corrosion and a bit of the mix caused the woodruff key to become brittle. The forces on the cam aggravated this, and the key flipped as a result. The rest is history as they say...

Regards,

Beauty, Richard.

I guess Luna is pleased, too.

G'luck.
