Big Money being pushed around sounds like to me.
Mark - this is what I would do. Please take into consideration that I am not familiar with your position within the scca crowd.
I would contest the ruling. I would ask other drivers within my class if they object to the Porsche 928 running with them?. Probabaly a pain staking ordeal but non the less, ask them. If they dont, ask them to sign a petition?.
If you gather a lot of signatures, what arguement could they have unless for some reason other than the car being more than 5 years old?.
Q: Have you thought about another car if they stand fast?.
Thanks!

You deserve to be grandfathered in. Let them do a safety check on your car to their satisfaction. If you pass, you should be able to race, regardless of age of the car.

Polite email sent. I quote:
"Dear Sirs,
I write to protest the SCCA's decision to revise the eligibility rules for 2005 with the effect that the Porsche 928 will no longer be eligible to compete within the World Challenge series. I encourage you to revisit this decision. The car is competitive in the series and holds the interest of several thousand enthusiasts, who will feel the loss keenly.
regards,"

Anyone familiar with Porsche's recent racing history knows that as they become more competitive lesser minds conspire to ban or penalize Porsche's abilities and success. Think back to the days of the 908 and 917, when the 917 was the ruler of the world endurance races; of course the rules were "re-written" to ban it to prevent it from emabarassing other makes. In the ALMS races during the era of the McClarens when the GT1 came on the scene and promptly put to shame using only a 3.2L engine everything else on the track; unless they made a gross error, nothing else could touch a GT1. The rules were "re-written" to make the GT1 run with intake restrictors to make the competition "more equal". Porsche won anyway.
Burn everyone else's okole. Then the 911s got so dominant that the rules were "re-written" to make them use intake restrictors to even the playing field, but penalizing performance efficiency. BALONEY! Competition should be unrestricted. The same crap was pulled on the original Chapparals of Jim Hall that were invincible, particularly the sucker cars. The next season the rules were "re-written" to effectively ban them because they were too fast. Another example of de-evolution at work. The weak and moronic penalizing the cunning and brilliant. Barf I say. It is one reason the ALMS series is so boring today. Audi has their way and no one else bothers to seriously compete. At least Panoz kept at it for an unusually long time, but now barely bothers to field more than one entrant.
Someone uses his/her skills and dedication to a purpose to find a way to split hairs and present a superior performance or create a superior machine and the world craps on their head with envy, fear and mediocrity. On the surface they all give praise and then run away to plot ways to prevent or interrupt the achievement from continuing. This makes the whole thing a game rather than serious committment. A joke. Children playing. Rather than asking what they can do to better their performance, they all cry foul and stone the successful challenger to death. Garbage. I suspect this to be an uniquely human trait and a shameful one. The funny thing is that evolution will continue to occur despite the efforts of such numbskulls.
Let's start our own series of 928 only racers so the 911s and everyone else won't need to be worry about being embarrased. I know at least two or three strong contenders now and we could maybe commit to creating more cars. Can anyone envision themselves as owners/sponsors of 928 racers?

Mark,
So sad for such a long and successful run to come to an end - but everything does have a point of finality. Even with well intended and worded support as in Thaddeus' email, the best result would be another year (by year?) deferral.
Not knowing the intricacies and motivations of the World Challenge Series, I would have to speculate that a key issue driving a 'five year rule' is promotion of consumer sales of available vehicles, like the alternate Porsches mentioned - that is a goal of heavy sponsorship.
In the world of specialty cars, exotics, etc, I wouldn't think age and safety would be an issue; however, $ponsorship and $ales have likely spoken.
