Sorry if this offends some, but I have found that sneezing near a Porsche using American snot will "cheapen" the whole car in eyes of some purists. Sticking to a true factory color will keep some purists more interested, but only if the rest of your car is also 100% stock. There are many who won't care, as long as the paint job is well done and the engine bay, etc don't look out of place. If you really want to get something more unique, do so! Its your car, for your enjoyment, and a paint job is expensive. I hate to say it, but 928s don't have very good resale values either way.
Buyers might fear a repainted car because they are concerned it is hiding accident damage. Take some before and after pictures to show the vehicle condition clearly.

I wouldn't be painting the car for somebody else, so I wouldn't worry about that, just be concerned with what you want. The tinters in Glasurit are unique to it. If you went to make up the same colour with another brand it probably wont match. Its because the tinters that go to make it up are different colours themselves. It might look right at one angle but wont look right in another, just try looking at bad colour matches in different light. Then you will understand what I'm talking about.
Yes Dupont is a top product, I have painted things in it, Mercs and alike, but I always used the Glasurit base coat for the colour.

Hi Greg,
Here is what I know. We run a small custom paint shop and have good results. We use Glasurit exclusively. I love the product even though it can cost more. However when you consider the cost of labor, the product usually pales in comparison. Porsche uses all sorts of paint. Normally nowadays whoever is the cheapest. Glasurit, PPG, Sikkens, Standox, RM Diamont are all used on a regular basis. It used to be only Glasurit until the late 1980's.
There is a difference in Glasurit. They have the cleanest toners and clearest clear coats. Now consider that Glasuirt standardizes prices on all their colors, so a quart of red--one of the most expensive is still only $65 per quart the same as black. Go buy the same rough color of red from PPG and pay almost $115!!! Now the flip side of this is if you buy black at $65 and can get it from Dupont for $30!
Prep is the most important and no more paint is not better than less. You want a total finish of less than 7.0 mils ideally. Less likely to chip that way. Epoxy prime any exposed metal. Costly but worth it.
Use Glasurit and do it once with a top notch painter.

Hey Fast you make a good point, the only thing is that people doing it themselves see the product cost as the main issue. Their labour is free, but nothing really is free, because you could be doing something else, also I like your point about the colours of Glasurit, the primers are certainly denser, inregard to the colour and the cost, here we have three different pricing groups, you obvoiusly dont. You'll pay a $100 a litre for a group three here.
What I ceratinly didn't know is that the Factory now uses anything available to it, just cost cutting, I know for a fact that the Authorized Mercedes Benz workshop complain about the stardard the factory paints the cars these days. They are alsmost see through, if you need to paint a door, prepare to paint the whole side, the quality of the cars of the eighties is a thing of the past, for those who have worked on a W126 Benz you will know what I mean.

Drifting
changing colour even by only a shade will show up in all the door openings, not just the engine bay. if you change shade you change colour and must repaint everything that is visible.

Good point, Nick. Thanks to all for the input. Sounds like I won't go wrong with Glasurit. And I think I'll keep it Guards Red. I wonder what the "Guards" Red refers to... Maybe the typical color of the uniform of a palace guard?

Glasurit, Sikkins or Spies is all great stuff. PPG is good as well. Myself I am not fond of Du Pont. The key is using a good system. So what if the paint costs $400 instead of $100. How often do you paint a car like the 928. It is worth the extra money.

I want to have a total repaint done in the not-too-distant future. I have a 93 Guards Red GTS. Any opinions as to the best brand of paint to use? My mechanics favor Glasurit, and it certainly has a fine reputation. Any others to consider? And I have also read somewhere that Porsche did not use clear coat on red cars. Anyone know why, and should a repaint also avoid a clear coat?
Thanks in advance.

Stick with Glasurit and Sikkens

Sikkens has had a lot of problems as of a year and a half ago when they reformulated much of their line. Spies Hecker is pretty nice with a very simple product line. Poor technical support, however in most of the U.S. The best looking paint on the market hands down is Glasurit 90 line. The 90 line is water borne and really has a clearer and finer particulate in the toners. It also costs twice as much! We use 55 line because it is easy to use and friendly. I would love to use the 90 line, but no one wants to pay for it. No shops use it out here yet even though BASF who owns Diamont and Glasurit has a training center and warehouse here.
As to House of Kolors. It is fine, but overpriced and guess who they get their pigments from for most of their toners.......BASF!
Thanks.
