Has Anybody Installed a Modern Stereo/GPS?
I'm looking to update my 1987 928 with a full screen built-in GPS-Stereo which means relocating the rear A/C switches, along with other modern expected items like remote locks...
I don't like the pop-up screens, I want it look built-in...
Has anybody done this?

I am planning to put a Eclipse AVN 2450 in one. It has perminate screen that tilts. Its going to take quiet a bit of planning before I get into it. Several things are going to have to be moved. But anything is possible.

As I do this kind of work for a living I can tell you it is a time consuming pain in the butt. And as such I went with the Alpine flip up screen for my 88. The hardest part is the fit and finish of the center console followed close by finding a place for all the new wires and control modules that go with a nav system. you go to a shop and have it done and you will pay more for the fitting of the screen then for the rest of the system.
Not that I am trying to talk you out of it, just giving my 2 cents worth.

Man, I was just doing a search for the same thing last night. There was a post back in the summer with pix. But the pix wouldn't come up anymore. I think it was "Weissach" that had photos with a flip up one and one installed flush.

What about the Blaupunkt Chicago? Since all Blaupunkt units - including stock units, are the same size, it makes substitution an easier job. The Chicago has a 6.5" or 7" (motorized pop up) screen, and can be combined with a separate DNX nav computer, CD changer, etc.

I would recomend the clarion autopc, or the newer joyride as they are single din gps headunits with builtin display. Harman Kardon also maked a single din gps deck called the trafficpro i believe. Blaupunkt has a comperable model called the travel pilot. The hk's illumination would really match the 928 well. As a side note, i use my pocket pc with a bluetooth gps reciever and tomtom nav software. I like it much better that the in-deck solutions. Plus i can use the bluetooth gps reciever with my laptop, i can take it with me when i use other people's or rental cars. The software is upgradeable, and in many cases it would be much cheaper. I have found that decks that have built in nav abulities have a poor soundquality. I would go with the ppc solution again any day.

Hans...I had thought about this idea too. The pda gives you a lot more flexibility, like have mp3 music as well. Do you have a docking station/mount for your pocket pc in your car? If so, got a pic?

When i got my tomtom nave software, it came with a cradle that had a gooseneck and suction cup. If you go to a couple of the ppc websites like www.ppcthoughts.com or www.pocketnow.com they have reviewed many in car ppc displays. Several use the cigarette lighter to charge and hold the stand. I am using the belkin bluetooth gps reciever and have been very happy with it. http://www.mobileplanet.com/ is the place to go for a good selection of all thing ppc.
