Default Bilstein's can be rebuilt?

I recall from a couple years back that if you contact Bilstien you can have them rebuild your existing shocks for, like, $50 a piece. Has anybody done this? I may try this winter since the car will be off the road anyway. What do you guys/girls think?

If no one here has the answer to this question, I can try to go straight to the source and get an answer. My father-in-law is the new president of Bilstein.

Does this imply that a new, deep discount group purchase offer is close at hand? ....

Bilstein is owned by Thyssen-Krupp. The formal name of the company is Thyssen-Krupp Bilstein, and his office is here in Michigan, although he's out of town about 3 days a week. Bilstein has offices everywhere.

Funny thing is, he was president of Sachs when my wife and I were married. Sachs...as in the maker of high-end clutches and the owner of Boge. He left there before I got my 928. Bilstein only recently persuaded him to work for them (started October 1).

I've actually been wondering whether I should reveal this on Rennlist.

I'll have to ask him this weekend. He's going to be handing out candy at our house with my mother-in-law while my wife and I take our kids trick-or-treating.

Yes, Bils can be rebuilt, had my rears done recently, about half the price of one new unit for two. Note the test in the book - fully compressed, a good one should only show ~8-10mm of shiny shaft outside the body. More than this is not acceptable. When mine came back from rebuild first time, one was good, one was showing 25-30mm. Sent it back twice, finally went out there and stood over them until they got it right. Tried to tell me it was hard to do right because the rear bottom eye is not at 90degrees to the shaft. Bollocks, get the right jig. Anyway, they seem to be doing the job ok.

Could you indicate who/where you were able to get the Boges rebuilt? Thanks.

Sorry Ken but it won't help you. Check my location. The guy was no specialist, I think many competent workshops could do it.

Colin...." I think many competent workshops could do it." You are no doubt correct about that however in the U S we seem to have a plethora of "parts changers" who can replace anything but rebuild next to nothing no matter how much it might cost and sooner or later they may get it right. My, my that does sound negative .............. I better check my medication ......... Jack , Jack where are you ?
