Factory original mud flaps
There was some talk about mud flaps or more correctly option 360 'Splash guard corner pieces' some time ago. I think this option was part of the option C13 meaning delivery destination Finland. We had at the time legislation that required them if wheel arches were too open for stones to fly from tires to other vehicles windows. There is '87 928 S4 with code C13 for sale at insurance companies crash car sale and it has these genuine 928 mud flaps. There's even large raised numbers 9 2 8 facing towards the rear. In this case they're on rears only but have seen them behind front wheels also in one 928 S I think. There were no signs of them ever being mounted at the front in this S4 so it's likely they were not required there with S4's lower down side skirts. Picture isn't clear but IMHO they're really ugly. Nothing new there, they look ugly on almost any modern looking car.
Might have better pictures in few weeks if all goes well.
Too bad. This must have been most original and best kept S4 in the country. It has only 84544 km's (54500 miles) in odo and everything looks and feels almost new. Also has few interesting options like 220 and 538:
C13 Finland
139 Seat heating left
220 Locking differential (40%)
249 Automatic transmission
340 Seat heating right
454 Cruise control
513 Lumbar support right seat
528 Passenger side mirror convex
533 Alarm system
537 Left seat with built in memory and lumbar
538 Right seat with built in memory and lumbar
567 Windshield green graduated tint
586 Lumbar support left seat
Asking price is 12000e. If it was still ok it would bring maybe 20000e.

Yes they do say 928 I saw an S on the freeway last weekend with the flaps on the rear and had forgotten that they did say 928 and yes they are very unattractive in my opinion , but this was a very nice white S . I was in the BMW hauling dogs so no chance to have a 928 moment.

Yes, "ugly" does begin to capture the essence ....
Below is a somewhat more advanced concept of the mud & stone control as applied to Japanese market cars - by comparison, not bad!

All didn't go exactly as planned, what ever does. Anyway, now S4 is back on the road with flaps still on.
Front bumper do not fit correctly yet. It does not have sunroof and has old style door insides (like many other local '87 S4's).

The door panels are different than the US models....also the sunroof delete is rare here too....Also it has the speaker fader on the floorboard like older 928's....it seems a combo of old and new...but maybe thats how the finland models were equiped?

Three Wheelin'
Heinrich-- why are the seats unusual?
Iceman-- speaker fader on the floorboard? Do you mean by the emergency brake handle? Isn't that a headlight angle adjuster?

All Finnish sold '87 S4's I have seen used old style ('78-'84 in US) panels if 10 speaker stereö was not specifically selected. To my knowledge same vintage ROW cars already had 10 speakers and later style door panels by default, except '88-'89 Club Sport's. As is normal, headlight adjuster do not work. Older liquid using version almost never does, even without accident damage.

Erkka: Did you buy that car and fix it, or what is the story? I'm a little confused here...
I can understand why one would put mud flaps on a car that is predominantly used in climates with lots of snow, salt, or other stuff on the road to make them less slippery. But they are not the most elegant solution, to say it carefully...
The 10-speaker system was not standard in Europe until some time in the late 80ies or so (I'd have to look it up). In 87 they certeinly were an option. I've seen quite a few '87 models with the "old" style door panels.
in the US, the 8-speaker system was an option in 1984. The 1985 brochure lists - as standard features - the following two:
- 8-speaker hi-fi sound package
- 4 loudspeakers
You figure out what that means...
Oh, and in 1986 they eliminated the 4 loudspeakers from the list. I think that might be a downgrade...

Friend bought it and had it fixed by pro. He plans to keep it for long time. He has several parts cars so he had everything needed except time and skills. One 928 project is more than enough for me.
I can't remember seeing old style in S4's other than Finnish versions. In '86 ROW S yes. In any case multi speaker system was improvement what became option at same time on all markets and was standardized in US and UK markets long before others.

I saw a Porsche accessory brochure from '82 that had the mudflaps with the impressed 9XX for all models. I bet there's a bunch on a shelf somewhere!
...
The multi-speaker doors are different too, with a longer indentation where the speakers are.
BTW: the indentation takes away 3 of the 5 holes for a manual crank for the windows. If you wanted to downgrade to those.
