Default 928 Magazine

Does any one know if there is a magazine or publication that is made for people who own 928's? I havent seen any and I was thinking on starting one that would be free for all of us to get. Something that would have tech sections as well as pictures of our 928's and stories from all of us.

If there isnt one out there I will do a poll to see if any one wants one.

Tres:

There is already the 928 Forum Magazine. Search the archives here - I think their URL is just 928forum.com.

Publishing a magazine is pretty expensive - I have no idea how you would do this without charging for it. Unless, of course you are very rich and generous. We love generous people...

Hi Nicole,
I didnt know the forum had one.

I am not rich by any means however I have a advertising company and we build magazines and print them for our clients as well as build web sites for them so I already have a pretty good way of doing it very cheap. There are not a lot of people out there that would want it so the run would be really small.

Just an Idea I had.

More is definitely better. Tres, if you want to, do it! I'm on the 928 Forum mag's editorial staff and I think it would be wonderful to have even more 928 publications. Sign me up.

Hi Tres: I'm in the same business, just a one-girl shop, though...

It would be ideal, if Tres could help with the production of the 928 Forum - it would make more sense to improve on the current publication than to start fragmenting the "market". The 928 Forum has good articles as it is - it just needs to be produced more professionally. At the same time, Tres could provide some editorial input, especially from his region. A win-win in my opinion...

Hi Nicole,
Its neet to meet someone out there in the same field. We should talk sometime.

As far as the magazine goes, I would love to help out on the other one. If there is more interest for me to do that then to start another one the thats way I can go. I just wanted something out there we all could use and enjoy. So far its 50/50.

I see alot of people have viewed the post but hardly anyone is responding. A couple of more responces either way would be nice. I thought this would be a topic everyone would want to have input on.

Thanks Nicole,

Tres

I tend to avoid magazine subscriptions, because they pile up. I should hook up with 928 forum mag tho.

I will take anything and everything. I can't get enough info. I have not seen enough info to the electronics in this car. I would love to learn how the brains work.

Hi Tres,

I'm the editor of 928 Forum Magazine. Just so that there is no confusion, we aren't related to Rennlist, although John D. has beem more than instrumental in helping out with the magazine by allowing us to communicate over rennlist.

I've been approached at different times on the topic of how I would feel if a competing 928 related publication were to come out. My answer is always the same, I would love to be a subscriber to a 928 magazine that I didn't have to do anything but pay for . As much as I love my involvement with 928 Forum Magazine, it is a lot of work and takes it toll as far as time and expense. However, my conviction is strong that it is a necessary part of the 928 community, and as time goes on and we get better at this publishing game, the magazine will be able to function as an integral part of 928 ownership. That is my hope anyway.

The magazine is always interested in volunteers. It is run strictly as a volunteer effort, and is set up as a non-profit corporation. All of the subscription and ad revenue go back into the magazine. As can be seen, we could use some help on the website which hasn't been updated in ages. I am not computer savvy in the slightest, and know nothing about web hosting. Someone with the time, skill and desire would be a great benefit to the 928 Forum Magazine team.

I'd be happy to discuss with you (or anyone) that has a strong desire to contribute time to the magazine in order to improve it.

At the same time, I wouldn't want to dissuade you from producing your own publication. It's hard to know what the subscribers want, although I'm positive more would definitely be better. 928 Forum Magazine is an expensive magazine to produce, because of the use of first class materials in an all color format, and it is only a quarterly. We have chosen to stick with a very indepth format, maybe even to a fault. I've received some email that the technical aspects of some of our articles go beyond what some of the subscribers really need. But the mission of magazine has to be more than bringing eye candy to our readers. First, there are so many other mags that can do it better and cheaper than we can. Second, it is my belief, and I believe the editorial board of the magazine shares the same conviction, that we need to share the indepth technical information with as many 928 owners out there that are willing and able to take the time to digest it. The more knowledgable and technically literate the owners are about the cars, the better is will be for everyone in the long run.

It would be interesting to start a low buck format rag, maybe in newsprint like 9 Magazine (not calling 9 a rag by the way), that came out bi monthly, or even monthly, maybe with some quick how-to stuff or weekend projects. You did say free right? I think at that price, you would have a very large interest. That way, 928 Forum could focus on the bigger stories (i.e. 16v Superchargers and Holley Carb replacement for L-jet cars in the upcoming issue) and the monthly could cover the DIY weekend projects: brake bleed, tensioner fluid check, bulb replacement, etc.

If you're really up on starting your own periodical Tres, I think you should go for it. If it doesn't work out, no one will be none the worse off for it. If it does work, and blossoms, think of the benefit it will have for everyone. If it snowballs enough, I may be able to retire my publisher hat.

I agree with Dave. I have stacks of magazines, mostly professional, that I need to attack and do less often than I should. Of course, I must spend some time here, right, attempting to satiate my P-car fetish. I vote for Tres to join with Adam and contribute to the 928Forum effort. One more head and viewpoint adding more variety to an already welcome P-car mag.
