mspiegle,
What works good on car A does not always work on car B.
My friends 1.8t VW was running rough - he put triple platinum plugs in it.
I suggested to try different plugs, he put indenso iridium plugs into his 1.8 Turbo running about 12psi of boost because his buddies honda works great with them. Guess what, I've never heard a VW miss that bad since my friends diesel was running on 2 cylinders.
So the I put in cheepo copper plugs, gapped a bit closer than stock - 5,000 miles and running, the car is running perfect.

Does anyone have a writeup with pictures on making a set of wires from a universal kit? I'm still curious how it's done.

I use the stock wires but use Bosch WR 78 DTC "Super 4". They are wonderfull plugs and last about 3 times as long as normal plugs. Sorry, US-guys they are so far only available in Europe

4 plugs cost between 30-35 Euros, that means up to $ 40 for 4 of these babies. But they are really worth the money, my wife just drove the "Shark" to Dallas and back. Total time on the road about 5 hours and the car used 11.5 l/100km or 20.6 mpg I think that is pretty good.

Currently Bosch Platinum +4.. Will go one heat range colder copper core, or try Denso Iridium once the S/C is on..... I think the Bosch +4 Copper was available in the usa from VAG Dealers. I had a Golf 16v once many years ago that had similar plugs.. They were pretty good in th VW. Tried Split Fires on my MBZ 500, it worked pretty well, but mostly run Bosch Platinums since they were available.
I believe the Denso should be fine for the S/C though..

Tried Bosch WR6or7DC, Super 4s and Platinum, - all the same. SE now has NGK V Groove in for the last 25,000 miles - last time I looked they looked about 3k miles old.
Wires are Magnecours 8mm
Jon
Black SE
Slate Grey GT - No idea what plugs are in

Riddle me this, how do you properly gap a multi prong plug? I've run into 5 cars now that all ran better once the plugs were gapped properly. Granted two of them were turbo's that are a lot more sensitive to spark plugs. I pulled the +4 platinum's out of my neighbors 84 put in properly gapped copper, the miss he had on upper RPM's was gone. Nothing else was changed. I think it had more to do with the gap than the plugs themselves. The +4 were about .39 - I gapped the copper's to .28.

Bosch "Silber" - single silver electrodes all the way!
Have W7RDS in the S4 - we did a PCA Acadia chapter Fall run last weekend, with a considerable amount of WOT and the usual fun stuff: My fuel economy suffered only slightly over 585 Km, yielding 10.1l/100Km.
Have WR8DS in the '80 5-sp - no miss, hesitation ever! Pulled the plugs this summer, all an even light tan colour, gap showing NO errosion - they have been in service since June, '92 - slightly over 12 years .....
Hacker, Re. your friends '84: Despite the generally good to excellent performance of the 16v ignition system, perhaps that car has some bad contacts, questionable coil wire, etc - that will not let it fire a 39 thou gap. Obviously, it likes the spec 0.7mm/28 thou. +4/+2 concept plugs cannot be regapped, IIRC.

not sure how they would work in a stock situation. my car has an electromotive tec3r ignition control system which has it's own direct fire coils for each plug. it requires a very narrow range of resistance in the plug wires and the stock wires with resistors in the boots were way to high as were the magnecors.
i do not know whether the distributor ends will fit a 928 , but the spark plug boots do fit into the heads though you have to push them in a bit.
i personally would probably not use them on my street car.
