Default Valve removal

I was wondering if there is a way to remove the valves from the head without any special tools, like it shows in the WSM?

Practically speaking, no. You can probably rent one locally. You may be able to rig something up, but the chances of losing or damaging parts is MUCH greater if you don't use an appropriate tool.

I've done it on a couple of 32 valve cars w/ local bought spring compressors. I'm not sure of the 16 valve layout though. Do a search in here on valve removal and other head related words. I know its in here somewhere. I was going back and forth w/ a few guys on it awhile ago. Good luck.

Well, a large C-Clamp with a big deep socket would work. The Socket need to be drilled through the side in a moderate area so that you can tweeser or magnet-out the valve locks. I did this on my 89. It took a while, but it was okay.

Its really not rocket science. Even Porsche has people "making" tools in the WSM, so it all is quite on the cuff sometimes.

Notice I didn't say "Porsche Tool"... Brendan, Tony, Those would fall under what I consider "appropriate" tools... I'd just hate to see someone trying to do this job with nothing but screwdrivers & pliers...

Ah, Yes, Shark - no screwdrivers are allowed near the 4000 dollar heads. Well, we know they aren't that much, but they were if you ordered from the dealer.
