Open passenger door. Close driver door. turn key in lock of driver's door to "lock". Remove key, set on passenger seat. Close passenger door. Viola........Key is locked in car...........That is the way my friends at EPE did it anyway.....

BTW, Hacker, I had a guy bet me I couldn't get out of a pair of handcuffs once. They were not very well made, and I broke the chain between the two of them, which made it easy to pick them open. The owner called me an SOB for breaking his toy. I am guessing the kid with the VW had similar sentments for you........

I've done it just as Larry M said. I was very late for a picnic I was hosting (Sharks in the Park) and was at the supermarket throwing a load of goods into the hatch area when I laid down the keys to free up my hands....

I called my wife and she brought over the spare key...then I remembered I had the Porsche wallet key with me.

Andy:

Look, I am all about liking P cars. I've had ....let's see....eight of them. I like to see photos of them. I like to drive them. I like to watch other people drive them. I especially like to be driven in one by a skilled P car driver.

But will you please revert to your old avatar? I mean we get enough P car stuff to watch. Your old avatar was a "healthful break in the monotony" and "interesting" and " stimulating".

Deni Durrell:

Consider yourself fortunate, (if anyone living in Oakland is fortunate). I once had the distinction of residing in beautiful, downtown EAST Oakland. I had a concrete building with burglar bars on all of the windows (pleasant safe neighborhood). In the house I also kept a shotgun (not that anyone would ever need such a thing in such a remarkably relaxed atmosphere). One fine day I arrived home, opened the door, and found the place empty...nothing much of value remaining. The fine citizens of EAST Oakland had used a child to slip through the burglar bars and when he was inside they told him to go over and unlock the door. (They raise their children properly in EAST Oakland.)

Next day the shotgun was used in a car jacking down the street. Luckily, the P car was kept in another location.

Ron:

Yeah, I know for one story there are others that can take the cake. Getting cleaned out is really ****ty, and I thoroughly sympathize. This happened once to my family when I was 11-12 and living in Riverside, not pretty (arm pit of America).

Recently there was no way they could have taken my car - the car is up on jackstands (with all wheels off), the battery was in the passenger side underneath the dash area, there are no seats in the car, both CV axels were disconnected, and finally, there's no gas in the car! Losers.... Check out this thread from Slashdot.org:

I was having dreams last night of three or four lasers horizontally installed at the garage door, that when tripped, sound a loud alarm or turn high intensity lights on and activate a security camera based with a TCP/IP link (I just installed a D-Link DCS-5300W the day before). Not into shotguns, but if I were to have one shoved in my face, I might think otherwise.

Your approach to repulsing criminals rather than relying on the police is a good one. In Oakland, in daylight, I observe one of my tenants loading MY refrigerator into a truck. I call the police to report it and ask for a car. I ask the tenants what they are doing. Truck driver immediately drives off. I give the license no of the truck, and the serial no. of the refrigerator to the police and say the truck left a couple of minutes ago and the direction. The police say they have better things to do than to go looking for stolen property. If Riverside is the arm pit of the country, I can't utter the obscenity of what Oakland should be called. This is a mild story. I can give you stories that would cause you to question why you live in America, no exaggeration, about Oakland. I used my shotgun to cross the street to get to the garage where I kept my car. Punks on the street knew it, cops probably knew it. Once when a guy tried to break into the house, and the cops arrested him and knew I had my shotgun aimed at his face when they drove up, the cop said: "Next time leave the door unlocked, let him enter, and save us the trouble of writing an arrest report", as he looked at the gun on the desk. Fun and games. In some parts of the city, you need a BIG RED button to push.

Like I said, there are stories that could probably take the cake, et voila. I personally would not go to E. Oakland (or even E. Palo Alto) if it were not a necessity. To actually live there is another animal entirely. I do not and would not live in Oaktown, but my cars do.

The only way I can think of is to lock the car with the hatch open then throw the keys in and shut the the hatch. Sounds dumb. Just Never put the keys down on the back hatch.
Thats the only way to do it in my car. I did it once at home unloading something. I never leave keys dangling in the lock and i must put them down instead of in my pocket. I have about 5 spares on hand so it was no big deal.
