Default Tires, what ya run?

I have an '80 model with 16 inch phone dials, what tires should I run, The car is a daily driver, and I would want good wet road traction. Im thinking about Pilot sports? What do you guys have good luck with?

I have found Yokohama AVS ES-100s to be perfectly fine as far as dry traction and very good in the wet on my Z. Not as good in the dry as the Yoko A-509s I ran on that car until they discontinued them, but better in the wet. As a result, I put them on my shark two months ago. Managed to stay with crazy-woman Beth's S4 on a fun drive, but I don't think she was trying to shake us. No wet-weather data yet regarding Yokos on the shark but I expect it will be fine. For $85 a tire it's hard to go wrong. Well, that was the price for 17's. I don't know what a set of 16's will run ya.

If you got the money Yok's or Mich pilots and if you don't Kumho 712 225x50s. Strong and last. Good wet traction but the 928 in general is not the greatest wet surface vehicle.

I have about 6,000 miles on Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's. Great tires, wet or dry. In fact, it's difficult to light the rear tires from a standing start (atuomatic trans), even in first gear.

Dave,
Where did you pay $85 a throw?

Thanks,

I guess I just sorta pulled that number outta my ***. Fact is I don't remember all the varous sizes/prices I researched in January both locally and online, that was just my vague recollection. I bought tires/wheels as a package deal and I'm not sure what the two different 17" sizes were. Maybe prices have gone up, they seem to be over $100 now.

However, I just looked and the AVS ES-100s in 225-50-16 that would be correct for your wheels are $83 each at www.tirerack.com. I really hate those guys right now(long story) but if all you want is a set of loose tires shipped they may be able to overcome their cranial rectalitis long enough to take care of you.

EVS 100s are pretty good for a passanger car tire.

Reletivly quite, smooth, long lasting, and such, but the side wall bends pretty good when you try to go around a conor.

I'm running the Bridgestone RE750's on my C-4 and on the 928. No complaints, nice wear and good overall wet and dry traction.

Go to Tirerack.com for the latest reports on sport tires along with price guides.

Regards,

Ken

Just switching over from the AVS-100's to P-Zero Neros (M+S) version.

I'll let you know as soon as I get some miles under them. ~$150 per for the 275/40/17 rears.

KHUMO-Supra 712's 17" - Good Value-
Sidewall a bit soft though at high speed turns.
Good dry traction.
Not the best in the wet.
Quiet
Long lasting tread!
Minor- Do not like pattern on sidewall . Not very attractive -somewhat difficult to clean.
-I would buy again if money was an issue!
No significant problems with Tramlining.

I'll see if I can get someone to take a pic while I take a corner near the limit of traction. The 40 and 45 series tires I have don't seem to mush around, at least not so much that I find it to be an issue. I'm running 29psi rear and 30psi front(cold) and they seem just fine. Come to think of it, the 60 series AVS tires on my Z seemed to be acceptable as well.

Then let me recheck my tires. I may have something diffrent than what I think I have. IT's been a while since I looked at them.

Part of the issue may be I'm running 15" wheels. I feel like I'm on water...

Well, there you are. 60's on a car this heavy are going to wallow unless they have some really super sidewalls on them. I can get away with it on a 2100 lb Z where 205-60's are a bit oversize but on a shark I bet that makes for some real "tin cloud" handling in transitions...
