I've gotta say that I told you so! Rennlister negativism cost someone a great deal!

At the risk of getting scrutinized like lowmiler did, I was just driving by a local dealer and saw a 1985 Euro 5 speed on his lot. I did not drive the car, but I did look it over a bit. It looks to be unmolested and in very nice shape. Leather dash has a couple of areas where it is pulling a bit. The interior is sort of rust colored cloth (ugly stripes) but sport seats in nice shape. Car sounded great and the dealer told me it is the 330hp euro motor with the Borg-Wurner (sp?) 5 speed. He has "most, if not all service records". Wheels are the flat dish's. The down side is the color. It is all original paint in very nice shape, but it is a (paint to order, according to the dealer) whitish-grey color that is just unattractive. This guy knows 928s and he says it is the fastest pre-GT car he's ever driven. Priced around $10,000. 114k miles, i think (can't remember now, but that seems right). Anyway, no affiliation, blah blah blah, may be a junkpile, but it looks to be a pretty nice car. I, personally wouldn't give $8,500, even if it ran like an F1 car, that color is UGLY! But, hell... it's another car for everyone to beat up on, sight unseen!

Not directly related to these cases or any low miler's cars but why it's so common to see ads with false hp numbers? Where they get these? Locally have seen lately '81 4.5 with 312hp when it should be 240 and '85 S 32V US-model with 350hp directly from the factory. Other great thing on many 928's is that they have all factory options. Never seen one that has and probably never will. Most of the time these all options cars infact don't have any.

This guy SEEMS to know his Porsches, but I'm sure Erkka is right on the hp #s. I just went by on the way home and drove the car. Holy crap, this thing is just blindingly fast. It may just be the 5-speed, but this thing will flat smoke the '88 auto I just sold. In a straight line, it is seriously fast. I didn't take it into any twisties, as the dealer was with me but I did run it really hard from 20mph up to about 105mph a couple of times and this thing pulls like a mule. I still couldn't get past that FUGLY color. I call it toenail grey.

Any Euro S car with 2.75 final drive 5 speed and 310 hp should run strong. Especially if the exhaust is not cobbled up for emissions.

Ya know, we all love these cars, and the problem with 928s is only those who love them will seriously consider buying one, probaly their second or third one.
I think a S4 is worth about 12-13K, and if it's less than that, ther's a reason. Yes you can rationalize up the price and still have a deal after putting in 3K, but a person who knows 928s is going to be curious as to why it's not priced right. My 82 was 7K three yrs ago, with 140K, and it was a good price, since it had a new t-belt and w pump. But if not, I'd expect it to be 5K, because I know a t-belt is a 1800 dollar job.
I think the price on that S4 will end up right were is should be, and the seller should get that price if he's honest. If he's not, then 9500 is only the beginning of someones. problems.. - Ruf

Here are some examples. I took these pictures, the brown car is mine, the red car belongs to a friend of mine.
The red car was repainted 3 years ago - NOTHING was removed, all masked off.
The brown car has terrible oxidation on the drivers fender, door and most of the roof. Within one week of my polishing it, those panels look horrible, I mean totally off color and faded. I hope to repaint the car this winter.
Can you tell either by these photos? These pics were taken after I washed my car, had not polished it yet this year at the time I shot these. In person it looked horrible, my friend said he could not believe I was shooting my car at that time for how bad it looked.
Nothing was retouched on these pics:

That's good info to know... Also I mentioned the condition of the spoiler not because I think a few hundred dollars of plastic is a deal-killer in and of itself, but because IMHO it is a reflection of the way the car was taken care of outside of last week's paint job.

Okay,
I simply e-mailed the owner of the red S4 and asked the basic question of if the beading was painted red on the front or rear from overspray. Here is the reply I got.

I am so awful with computers! He basically responded by saying that all of the beading, both front and back was still black. I specifically didn't mention when e-mailing him the first time that they should be black, I just asked if they were red.
I guess that answers that question, huh?
I'm going to go with: this car is a good deal and the better the deal is passing with every day. He is simply the kind of uninformed seller I used to look for when buying and selling these cars.
Someone said earlier that if the price was to low, that there had to be something wrong with the car.
well, here's a small list of some of the cars and prices I paid over the years:
1. 1989 Porsche 928 GT, black/tan with black piping, 32,000 miles, $19,500. (1999)
2. 1994 Porsche 928 GTS polar silver/classic gray, 5 speed with 39,000 miles, $30,000. (2000)
3. 1987 Porsche 928 S4, black/black 5 speed, 28,000 miles, $16,000. (2000)
4. 1989 Porsche 928 GT black/black, 26,000 miles, $24,000. (1999)
5. 1990 Porsche 928 GT black/black, 38,000 miles, $25,000. (2000)
6. 1993 Porsche 928 GTS red/black automatic, 63,000 miles, $25,000. (1999)
These all seem like pretty good deals to me, especially at the time when I bought them. And to the best of my recollection, there were no significant problems with any of them either. So, there are actually good deals, on good cars out there from unsuspecting sellers. You just have to look really hard and not be so quick to assume the worst.
I believe someone is going to get a really good deal on this car. Sorry it's going to end up costing so much!

Nicole. My car was painted 3 years ago. Everything was masked off. Nothing was taken out except the taillight lenses. My father painted it. He has 30 years of experince painting cars. My paint has not cracked anywhere. The reason your paint cracked is due to cheap paint, clear and primer.
I used Dupont Chromabase paint.. Color matched to the factory color but i think its a little darker. My dad says one fender was lighter than the other but, i cant tell at all so he didnt redo it. My 550$ of paint supplys. This money was for the paint and clear. I have half a gallon of clear on my car. I can buff it as much as i want.
The paint job on my car would have cost 3000$+.... It wasnt taken apart. Thats crap that you have to take a car apart to paint it. A little info, its a scam they really wont take it apart just tell you they did unless you watch them everyday...

It can be deceiving with a different rear end. Because power delivery is so different in the earlier cars from S4's, I almost think they are designed for a different sort of buyer.
