I agree that it is wise to look before you leap, and check the car out.

But I disagree that a repaint is always a horrible sign of what lies under the surface.

I have repainted my car, but beneath the surface, my car has has the engine completely gone through, rebuilt transmission, redone suspension, R-134 AC blowing cold, engine wiring harness, all new sensors, all interior electrical problems fixed, custom go-fast stuff like headers, exhaust, etc... My car, underneath my "respray" is a great car... But someone who is hyper-critical about resaprays, would never find out that every system in my car has been completely overhauled to "like new" condition...

I don't think that a respray is bad. But I do believe that a bad respray is bad.

Where can you get colored bumper beading? Always thought that black bumper beading in the **** end highlighted the ugly angles from body to bumper! Mike

A respray is not bad - it's bad, if the car has not been disassemblet to do it. Masking things off is just asking for the pain to start peeling where the masking tape used to be. I've experienced it three times, and anybody trying to convince me it does not happen will have a really hard time...

As to the painted beadings - I have never seen or heard of an option like that from Porsche. In fact, it would be an option so stupid that I can't imagine Porsche would do it. These beadings have to be a lot more elastic than the bumper covers, and painting them is just asking for cracks and warranty work. Besides - have you actually seen what the beading looks like and how it is mounted? It would probably crack and peel already while being put on.

That GTS - I have no idea what has been done to it, but given it's blinb-bling wheels it is quite possible it has been messed with otherwise. The fact that two red cars have the painted beadings does not mean it was an option from Porsche or is something desirable. It is not.

Guys: Look at the black one in I-da-hoe, if you want a real gem. The red one has big potential to be a disappointment for anything but a daily driver.

Low miler: Sorry for what I just said, but look at the pictures of the red one again, and see my comments in the other thread when the pic was first posted. I have sharp eyes for details...

Hey, hey, I was just kidding about the beading option thingy! No, that would be lucidcrous and would never stick!

I was just making a comment that there happens to be two different red 928's on Ebay, at the same time, with their pictures both taken during bright sunlight.

All I was saying was that it is possible that they are not red at all and that it is just a reflection from the sun.

I have e-mailed the seller to specifically send me pictures of the beading, both front and rear, up close and personal, so we can find out once and for all.

For example, if they're not red, then this may just have well been a very, very good buy.....................4 days ago!

And Nicole, no offense taken. Even on the cars I was selling (10,000-35,000 mile cars) there was always a buyer that could prove to me that my car was not perfect. They were able to convince me that a car with 1 mile on the odometer is not a perfect car, due to the fact of just tire wear alone!

That is why I got OUT of the business. And no, I don't look at you as one of those buyers I described. I was just making a comment on the similarities.

Mike,
Earl Sheib or Maaico can hook you up with a complete kit. You get body colored beadings, door-locks, window seals and usually the tailpipe and fender wells for only $249. installed!
No affiliation, etc...

OOOPS! Sorry to confuse an issue even further. I was under the assumption that we all knew the body-colored beading thing was a joke! I guess there should have been a disclaimer or something.

Sorry for the confusion, I was being highly facetious about the "color coded bumper beading".

There is nothing wrong with a quality repaint. Nothing at all. There is nothing wrong with 'spray and pray' - if it's a race car.

good eye nicole...I totally missed it till you guys noted it...gotta admit though, pretty paint can be misleading too - I'm just wrapping up $4500 worth of reparing what most folks thought looked pretty good...seems as though "tweaked" subframes and lots of bent front end parts can be hidden with a clever "cover up", and it's hard to really see the damage even on a frame machine and with the engine is out....

personally, I'd rather see all the ads and get all the feedback/comments I could if I was in the market for another shark...can't really get enough info most of the time, so I kinda liked the low's intel and the comments of the other listers...caviat emptor is always the bottom line though...

I'm with Low Miler 99.9% on his post. Bottom line is, you cannot tell paint in a damn picture unless it's total obvious (paint on the window, on the tire etc...)

Here are some examples. I took these pictures, the brown car is mine, the red car belongs to a friend of mine.

The red car was repainted 3 years ago - NOTHING was removed, all masked off.
The brown car has terrible oxidation on the drivers fender, door and most of the roof. Within one week of my polishing it, those panels look horrible, I mean totally off color and faded. I hope to repaint the car this winter.

Can you tell either by these photos? These pics were taken after I washed my car, had not polished it yet this year at the time I shot these. In person it looked horrible, my friend said he could not believe I was shooting my car at that time for how bad it looked.

Nothing was retouched on these pics:
