I just returned from the Monterey Historics. For those of you who were there, go on to the other posts. For those of you who were not there, Ya really missed it. This year the featured marque was Ferrari. There were lots of Ferraris there. There were some outrageous Ferrari Formula One cars there, including the 2003 Schumacher F1 car. At one point, all the F1 cars were on the track together. Someone long ago told me that there is NOTHING like a Formula One race. After seeing my first one in Long Beach, CA some years ago I understood what he meant. Everyone who considers himself an afficianado of cars and racing (yes, even dragsters) should experience one. I hesitate to say "see". It is far from visual alone. It envelops you and demands your total attention. This factory driver in the Schumacher car was that times 50. The whole track became electified as he attempted to break the absolute track record. Out f******rageous. Nothing I have experienced is quite like that car hitting 18,000 rpm in a flash in every gear, and in control. The sound is not even as it is on my CD of the same car; it is like an otherworld being taking over the whole track when it is experienced in person, and is worth the price of a ticket alone. Can you tell I'm pumped?? If you get off on F-350s ignore the above; it's not for you. Gotta go unwind.
Oh, yeah, the Porsche 908 won the sports racing cars above 2000 cc (big guys) race with it's little 3 liter and tiny tires. The monster Chevie engined Lola couldn't catch it and couldn't out-drag it. Porsche lives.
According to posts on another website a driver wrecked one of the F1 cars and a test driver tried to break the overall lap record set by a Champ car in 99, he fell short by 1.4 seconds. To be fair he was on grooved tires and didn't have that many laps in which to attempt the record.
Dave, my camera batteries went dead (*#@!!$!!) and I was too far from wherever I could buy any more. But I didn't want to waste any time to shoot photos anyway.
Given the amount of time the driver of the record attempt had on the track, he was doing well. From Friday, when he ran a 1 min, 11 secs, his best time Sunday was 1 min. 9 secs =/- and the record was 1 min. 7 secs +/- by a driver with condiderably more time on the track. Given more time the Ferrari would have improved but he only did 5 or 6 laps on Sunday.
Dave wasn't there or there would be grid girl photos and photos of all sorts of girls. The last time we were at the track, Dave wore out his camera and got neckstrain from doing that . But, alas, he wasn't there this weekend, as he said, so we will all need to wait until the ALMS races in October and hope he shows with his camera. He is the official Rennlist photographer of delightful sights at the races.
Ron_H,
Sounds like a GREAT time...your message reflects your enthusiasm. I was similarly amped by attending the much more sedate Rennsport Reunion II. Can't wait to see the Rolex and Sebring events this year. Will try to get down to Miami to see a Grand Prix event sometime, if they still hold them there. I want to attend an F1 even badly as well. To bad there about the G-G photos...where's Dave when we need him?
Cheers,
Tim

Jeez... you try to get one good pic of a trio of grid girls and you never live it down... Better be nice or I won't send you a copy...
