Default VW GTI vs. 928

There is a video that I downloaded from some web site a year or two ago where a 928s gets dusted by a VW GTI Golf2 (16v). I've always wondered just how much that particular VW must have been modded. Yesterday, a couple of guys pull up next to me in one. It sounded like a weed eater with some cool wheels. It was pretty much GO from the green light. He got on it hard and was into 2nd gear while I was still nearing redline in 1st. All he got on me was the initial jump and that is because it was my will to let him have it. By the time I was topping 2nd gear, I was multiple car lengths ahead.......but I didn't stop there.......there was still a long stretch of pavement infront of me so I rubbed it in real good. When they caught up to me at the next red light, a mile or so down the road, it was an exchange of smiles and thumbs up.
It was a sigh of relief after witnessing that video. I've only raced two other cars in the last several years; a newer mustang gt (with exhaust mod), which I spanked, and some type of dodge stealth, which I also spanked, but that one was slightly more of a challenge than the mustang...not much though.

So many videos are staged it's hard to tell whats real and whats not. Any GTI would have to be seriously modded to keep up with most 928s. That doesn't mean it can't be done though. You can now buy several versions.....1.8T, 240HP VR6, etc. In stock form all are quick, but not really fast. Modded I think they could be very fast. The RS32 with all-wheel drive would be a pretty good place to start. Great cars, owned a '96 with the VR6......one of the best engines out there with a great exhaust note.

I used to own a Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9, even that would eat a Golf GTI (just) from a red light. I "raced" once a GTI 16V, he could not escape from me, but I could not gain alot of ground either.
But with the 928 (be it S or S4), no way a stock GTI can keep up!

I used to have an '87 GTI Golf2 (16v). It had almost no equipment, so very light, cams, header, and exhaust. It would embarass Mustang GT's and Z28s. So, I could see a car with the right mods possibly holding its own with a 928s.

There is a video floating around showing a F350 turbo disel doing a 11 second run at a drag strip. Had all the mods available for that engine. I think they use propane injection sorta like nitrous for disels, big turbo, chips etc. The black smoke that the thing emits was a sight to see. Looked like a black fog blasting out of this big 6 inch pipe. It was a four wheel drive rig so it hooked up pretty good. It could all be a hoax but it looked pretty cool anyway.

There is a GTI look alike built with 928 engine running around. Parked next to a real GTI, you will notice that the 928 version is much larger in all dimensions,
particularly wider. Nicole has the link to this car. What a sleeper. It all appears to be stock outside, but underneath it is 928. Maybe that was the one.

I saw that car in an article in European Car Magazine. What a hoot. The video of the Gti is really a Gti that has some serious mods. I saw it about a month ago and can't find it now. I think I got the link from a thread on this board.

Actually the new VW GTI R32 is good for 0 to 60 in 6.0 secs, and the quarter in 14.3.

Not too shabby...

I do not think that video was staged since the 928 smoked it's tires during the upshift, so he had his foot to the floor. And I don't believe it's smoke from the engine either because I couldn't see any at the launch.

Gotta' give that little V-Dub credit...

I had a GTi put on an impressive show for me a couple weeks ago. I was cruising down I-70 near Vail CO when I saw it comming up the ramp to enter the freeway, BIG wheels, lowered, euro plate on the front, and obviously hungry for speed I had the Cayenne to the floor up to 120mph and he was right on me. I moved over and slowed a little for a big sweeper and he when right on by. I must say it was an impressive display because the Cayenne is no slouch over 100mph, much like the 928. I think a new R32 with a SC kit would make for a wicked little stealth car. Of course had I met him in the GT.....the situation may have ended differently

Looks like the 928 was already starting to reel him in by the end. Serves him right I guess. A stock 928 is no 1/4 mile car, let alone 1/8 mile. Don't get me wrong... rabbits can be damn impressive, and I'm not trying to put them down, but that 928 was so far out of his element that it seems like a pointless exercise to me.
