It would take one hell of a boxster or 996 to hang with this Volvo:

I only know of a couple 928's that would stand a chance.

Interesting ad but I'd never compare a Volvo to a Porsche or a BMW...completely different league. Now that Ford owns Volvo....even bigger gap, I'm guessing. One thing Ford will do for Volvo is to help bring their electrical systems at least up to Ford's standards...which ain't that good either now that I think about it.

At any rate, I love my wife's Volvo 855 Turbo....225hp....quick off the line 0-60 7secs...but handles worse than a shopping cart (without aftermarket suspension mods). I got pulled over in that car once...90 in a 55...told the guy there must be some kinda speedometer error...this is a Volvo I still got a $185 ticket plus 3 points...bummer!

ROFLMAO!

Are these ads fake or did someone at Volvo actually think people would believe that crap?

My father used to own a Volvo - worst POS car I ever drove. Granted, it was old (142) but it was heavier than your average APV, had engine and suspension systems build - it seems - entirely from rubberbands, and you were seated much like you would be at a dinner table. And it's ugly to boot.

It may have changed, but I'll never know. I'll take the bus before I own a Volvo.

I think Volvo was (and still IS to a certain extent) trying to "un-Volvo" themselves.

The Turbo-Bricks can and do haul ***. But when most folks think "Volvo" they either think 240 DL and courduroy-jacket-with-patches-on-elbows-in-the-People's-Republic-of-Berkely, or the more childish among us might go to Beavis and Butthead "he said 'Volvo' heh-heh".

They will do almost anything to lose the stody image. There are only so many people in and around the UC Davis campus to buy cars. They need a wider audience. They're getting there.

one, this day after it rained the night before, me and my freind went flying around town in my volvo. me made a 100 foot burnout going up hill and also ended up taking a right turn when we meant to take a left. and i dont mean by mistake, i actually flipped the car around 180º and kept going. all these old guys in a car down the street started applauding when we drove by. it was classic.

As former owners of a Volvo 740 wagon, me and the misses can honestly tell you that we never confused it for the 928. They dont call them BRICKS for nothing.

Would i buy another Volvo. You Bet!

The only problem is that the last real Volvo is the 940/S90 series.

And 360 GLT in first ad is no real Volvo either. It's damn DAF and probably made in Netherlands. DAF was purchased by Volvo in late seventies maybe. Since then they have made all/most small Volvo's like 340, 360, 440, 460, S40 and maybe even 480. Make matters worse, S40 = Mitsubishi Carisma. They shared underside. Latest S40 = Ford Mondeo I think.

I *think* the current S40 is based on the same platform as the Mazada 3. Smaller than the Mondeo/X-Type plateform and no AWD. Its a crying shame that the only car in Volvo's US line that is FWD only is its sporty compact sedan.

Speaking of Volvo hooliganism, Brian (my MY '80) use to drive an old beat-up 240. He also got pulled over doing 90 in a 55 with it, and used the same excuse. The cop didn't buy it, but the owner's manual did state its top speed as being 85 or 90 (I forget), so the judge decided the car couldn't have gone that fast. If only they knew...
Brian had a habit of buying cheap tires for it so that he wouldn't feel bad about skidding them to death. He went through many tires this way.

OK, so as long as we are cutting & dicing Volvos, what do you think of the 850 series - probably non- turbo, 5-sp, wagon, as a daily driver for ma femme? (my preference is an A4 manual Quattro, but you know how that goes ... will win ... eventually ... maybe ).

850's are nice. I would like to pick up a T-5. plus what is cooler than saying you have a 5 cylinder car.

But if i could choose any car, it would be the new S60R. what an awesome car.

So the "Volvo" in the add is just another econo-box but with a few Volvo trim parts , grill and badges . I just love how you can add value to an item just by calling it something else . Taking a name which meant something and using it to sell a lessor product at a bigger mark-up ....... like VW station wagons ....... Letting the marketing department create "new" cars from a borrowed platform .

Remember Yugo? They had it all backwards. They took Fiat 128s and bastardized them. They should have just bought a Fiat franchise. Even Hyundai when it started out with the Excel should have told everyone that they used a bunch of mopar stuff. Might have sold more units before people realized that small Dodge cars are crap too.
