I find the ad using the 928 as an example very relevant. It has a rear mounted transmission to improve handling.

It's one of the ugliest and most hated Volvos ever made. When I look at it I get the same feeling as many of you get when you see the AMC Pacer ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
A rear mounted transmission does not justify the use of the phrase "It corners like a Porsche" next to that image. It's about to tip over!

For some reason Volvo had some grudge against Porsche in the 80's... I have a magazine where a Volvo advertisement for a 740 Turbo wagon slams the 944 on acceleration and in various other areas. I don't seem them trying that anymore...I don't think you can compare the new Volvos to a Boxster or 996 ![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

The fine print of the add.." gives the sort of road handling where a driver loses his nerve long before the tyres lose their grip " Now that IS FUNNY .....so afraid the thing may just tip over !!

I still drive a 960 wagon.
I don't even try to drive it like it is a performance car. HMmmm. Maybe I will take it to the next PCA driver ED event instead of the 928. No wait, my wagon isn't a turbo.

trust me, that 960 will wipe the asses of quite a few cars. i never lost a drag race in it. its also pretty damn good for donuts, driving fast on wet cement (only in a parking lot mind you), and its awesome sound system. one time some kids in an old 240 pulled up next to me and my 11 year old sister and wanted to race. light turns green, and i smear them like they are standing still. we get to the next light and my sister, whom we affectionatly call "doogie" pointed at the kids and started laughing. they revved thier engine again and this time the light turned green and i stood there for a few seconds while they blew off down the road. i slowly make my way through the interesection and stomp it. in about 2 seconds i pass them up like they are sitting still again. i have more stories of things i did in that car, but i would only tell you if you asked. since this is not a "lets talk about things we did in volvos" thread.

When I had some good yokohamas on the Volvo XC Wagon, and cranked up the tire pressure to 45 psi, it wasn't so bad. Now that I have the 928 to satisfy my craving for lateral Gs, the Volvo has returned to duty as a yuppie pick-up truck.

OT.
I saw a show of the brittish series "top gear" once. They had a 928 on it and also a ford sierra. The designer of the sierra was also there to tell he was so inspired by the inovative design of the 928. He was especially swept of his feet by the design of the side windows which, up til then, no car designer had come up with. He "borrowed" the idea and put it into the sierra. He also more or less copied the shape of the quarter side window as well.
I don't see the similairity though.
I had a volvo 440 once. Drove like a normal car. It didn't go like a BMW. Didn't come close to the cornering of a porsche. But it braked like a Volvo. (nothing special)
