Default Timing belt 1 tooth off?

If my timing belt was one tooth off would that cause hard cold starts like hunting for the idle for a couple seconds then idle fine?
Also a warm no start like a fire and stall?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Always put the MY of your 928 within your question. Or put it in your signature. This will help get your question answered.

I'm not experienced with the early 928's as I own an S4. But I would make sure that the timing for each bank would be critical. Hopefully one of the experienced ones will chime in to help.

does you car have CIS ? If so just turn the mixture screw about 1/ 16 of a turn CW to richen it , and test,
The mixture screw is infront of the fuel distributor ,press it down till the teeth engage, then turn gently, not much.
otherwise post a picture of your engine bay.
Fix the timing belt as well

Thanks Mrmerlin yes CIS. I'll give the mixture screw a try. Def seems to be fuel related. I've been really through it trying to sort this.
The FP relay, both fuel pumps, the accumulator, the fuel filter, thermo time switch and the O ring on the fuel distributer pressure regulator.
next thoughts were the AAV, WUR and fuel distributor.
I hear a slight random click, click. from the accumulator after it's been run and shut down. The sound of the diaphragm maybe loosing pressure?
That's why I swapped it but the new one does the same thing.
It was running fine prior to the belt swap.
Hence why the question about whether being 1 tooth off would cause the hunt for idle on start and a no start after about 15m after running.
I feel like I might have been iffy on the markings of one of the cams when I did the TB a while back. like it might not have been in the center of the indention.
If I remember correctly I should be able to remove just the top cam covers to check the alignment without getting completely in there correct?

Regarding CIS.. watch the whole video so you know the functionality. Without proper CIS fuel gauge set diagnosis is futile.

The belt being off a tooth will compromise performance constantly, but not "sometimes" by warm temperature or any other variable. This its own separate problem with your engine that is not that difficult to fix.

Thank you Drooman Great Video! Gave me some ideas on what might be happening. I will def get a CIS fuel gauge set and run some tests.
Performance really isn't an issue. I just took it for a nice spirited run.
Same problem though, hunted for a few seconds to idle after overnight rest, then ran perfect. Got home shut it down, waited 10 min and it starts and stalls. At least it's consistent! haha

Completely agree with Neil Peart. Him and Stuart Copeland are couple of my all time faves.

The symptoms along with the accumulator clunking sounds like classic pressure bleed down after shut off. The test (with the right gauge) is how long it holds pressure after warm shut off. See "leak test" below. (for 1979 but substantially correct) If you don't have service manuals try to get a set... better to "Be cool or be cast out"

My initial thoughts were that those sounds were the accumulator loosing pressure quickly. Especially since if I crank it right after a ride it fires right up but if a wait 10 min or so the system looses enough pressure to say no thank you.
I do have the manuals. Have had #1 open to 25 and next to my night stand here all week planning my attack.
I've never ran system pressure checks before on this car so looking forward to learning some things on that.
Also being able to no only drive the car but actually go somewhere and then get back in it and it starting.
So I can... "See more of the people and the places that surround me now"
this look like its about right?

This book is also worth having for CIS work, has more explanation of the minutiae of operation than the video. Also more detailed "if this check that" content than the factory manuals for finding the offending components, and allows for a more purposeful stride through the process.
