Unhappy air cond. works below only at lower temps.

Hi. Why would my air conditioning work at temperatures below about 23dCelsius and not above. When the car sits outside on a hot day it won't work at all? What gives? Or what doesn't. Thankyou for any replies.

Do you know if the clutch is slipping?

A possible failure mode is the relay inside the head unit gets corroded and weak. As such, the amount of electricy supplyed to the cluch is low. This results in a weak magnetic field on the electromagnetic clutch.

When the weather get hot, the compressor has to work harder. This means more force on the clutch. This force overcomes the weaker electromagentic feild, and the clutch slips, and your get no cold.

At least thats what mine did.

Don't let the clutch slip for too long. I forgot mine on, and it goe so hot it froze the bearing up. That causes all sorts of problems.

Hi VirusbusUnits. When the car is parked in the cool garage the air cond. works. Outside temp. can be hot 32.C .I can cruise around all day with it working until I shut the car down. Upon restart forget it! The air will not work again once the car has been heat soaked. Anymore knowledge would be appreciated. I know not much about the system. Thanks. Mike.

Low on refigerant is highly likely.

But before you go dumping another pound of freon (R-12) into the stratosphere, find and fix the leak.

Even R-134a is considered greenhouse gas.
