Lightbulb Flywheel Lock Adapter: 32v to 16v

You know the feeling when you flip open the correct drawer of the tool chest - and the item has gone AWOL!
It was time to torque the crank bolt on the '80 - and the only flywheel lock that appeared was the 32v one: A fundamental difference of the 16v and 32v car locks is that the engagement face is rotated 45 deg.
There are several entertaining ways to lock the flywheel - but none as efficient as using the proper tool.
To the point, I took some 1/4" aluminium plate, a scribe, and laid out two traces of the bolting plate of the tool: one was rotated 45 deg over the other. I then traced the outline again to create a 'U' clip that would hold the lock on three sides against the plate above. These two pieces were hacked out on a bandsaw, and the 6 holes drilled.
when installed - it worked like a charm! The Snap-On wrench "cracked" sharply @ 220 ft-lbs: Job done!
The pics follow - easy to make (~15min), and may just save your day.

- and this is the contracption installed.
Were I to start again, I would replace the bolting plate on the lock with a disc. This disc would have the two sets of holes - rotated 45 deg about the center; however, that would require cutting steel bar stock and welding. This deal could be fabricated with a hack saw and a hand drill in minutes.

Very nice! I wonder how many people would like a universal lock as you describe. I know a machinist who might be willing to do small runs...

Go for it! I had the same motivation: mill the grooves in a length of bar stock, cut & paste, weld, ..... but my machinest buddy said to me as he was drinking his coffee, lighting a cig, and tending 3 machines .... "Great idea, just put it on your drawing over there on the small projects table". I could barely see the table for the cobwebs - this was not going to happen anytime soon, maybe months!

Another FYI in case someone still thinks its 16V vs 32V which determines which style is needed. Its not, its old vs new. There are many 16V which need later style as change happened years before last 16V went out of production. IIRR change was done in '83 MY.

My Mother used to say "there is nothing new under the sun!" I wonder if that might apply here? I bought this item from 928 International about 4 years ago to do my first belt change. Jerry

Bump, since there is some renewed interest in this item showing up again, now in the 928 e-mail forum. I sent them over here to have a look and thought I would make it handy. Jerry Feather

If the engine is out of the vehicle and the bell housing is off, how do you use the flywheel lock?? I am scratching my head. Couldn't find anything in the threads.
