Default Why do bodykit manufacturers ignore the 928?

I have been looking for a bodykit for my 928 for a while now and I have come up with nothing. The only ones I find are super expensive ones for about $3000 and up. You can get a complete bodykit for almost any car for about $800 with numerous configurations except for Porsches. Why? We should demand that these manufacturers create something for our beloved car. Who knows what the potential of this car could be with the right creative individual designing the bodykit. I know there are a few individuals out there who wouldn't change a thing on their 928s. I knew one person who said the same thing about his 1999 Mustang GT. That was until he saw one done up with the best body kit I ever saw for a Mustang. He was singing a different tone months later.
If you know where I could get a reasonably priced bodykit that can be retrofited on a 928 or one that fits it like a glove let me know.

The why is obvious. There is very little demand for 928 body kits...

Copying my post over from Here

Evian,

I don't have all of the numbers at my fingertips, but at a guess I would attribute it to two factors:

1) More mustangs and more civics are built each year than the entire production run of 928s.

2) People in general are more willing to hack up a Bic lighter type car than a 928.

So if 1% of all 928 owners worldwide are willing to chop up their cars, that's a total market of maybe 500.

There were 1.2 million Fox-body mustangs built from 1986-1993. If 1% of all of the owners are willing to chop up their cars that's a total market of 12,000.

Due to #2 above, I think the percentage is much higher than 1% for mustangs and civics. I'm sure the same theory applies to the civic, though I couldn't find the production numbers as readily.

Basically, when you tool up to make a custom part, the cost of tooling & development must be amortized based on how many units are likely to be sold. You do the math.

The real reason why there are no body kits for the 928:

It is perfect already. Modification is diminishment.

The only thing I would change: the wheels. I have flats, which are forged but don't allow enough air to the brakes particularly the rears, in my opinion. And I like cup wheels, which were ultimately offered. So there. Guess I should buy a later model, but I like the original style 928 body.

Think of it this way. Good design is subtle. It doesn't knock your socks off. In fact it may not even jump out at you. It has evolved during the design process to a state of refinement and fitness for purpose that is not readily apparent. That's why a drive around the block in a Porsche is not enough; a couple of hours are necessary before the true nature of the machine becomes appreciated. It is designed to function at a level those other vehicles won't achieve. And trying to "improve" its simplicity for the sake of visual impact is pointless and counterproductive.

Here is an example: Try to improve an egg. Think of its purpose and where it must function and why. It must not roll out of the nest. It must protect an embryo out of the mother and from the elements. It must not be too heavy. It must allow the emerging bird to break out of it when the time comes. Etc, etc. Now try to add to or modify it. Lots of luck.

Think Porsche 904. What more do you need as a GT for the street where fuel is $6.00 per gallon?? Now think Porsche 906. Now the scale is tipping toward racing. Please.......what is a mustang?? If that's what gets you off, well, ok. Not for me thank you.

There are a couple places that sell cheap 928 kits.
But they look like crap.

The better kits are big $$$.

As many people mentioned, if you are a body kit manufacturer, and you have a choice of designing a kit for the new 2005 car lines, and selling thousands of kits, or designing a kit for a 928, and only selling a few, they will design one for cars that there are more of.

Plus, as you hear, most 928 owners love their cars as they are.

I think the early cars could use an update.
I'd buy a nicely done kit.
But I am in the minority.
And the kit would have to look amazing.

But 99% of s4 owners like their cars just fine as they are.

Does anyone remember that SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE SKIT- The Adobe . The cheapest car you can buy! The body was made of clay. Would be nice to be able to mold the shape or extension you would like to customize your vehicle.- don't like your work, pull it off !
