Default can u fix a front bumper shock?

One of my 84S front bumper shocks got smushed. It's compressed all the way. Can it be pulled back out? If so, how? Someone suggested that I drill the back side to relieve the pressure and pull it out. What do you think?

it did it's job and it's done.

you could pull it back out so the bumper sits right, but it won't ever work again.

replace.

Dave, thanks for replying.

I'm too poor to replace that part. Pelican is asking $558 for it.

If I drill the back side to relieve the pressure, the piston should come out, right? Then I could tap it, fill it, and put a bolt in it. What should I fill it with?

Whoa - there's a pair of used one's on eBay right now! They're at $3, no bids, no reserve, came out of a 1982. Surely easier, cheaper, and safer...

Big Dave, I hope you read this.

I believe that there are two bumper shocks on each the bumpers you have in your garage. Perhaps you could take a look?

I checked my box of stuff from the 81 we dismantled, and I don't have 'em, so I'm pretty sure you do.

Thumbs up

Depends...
If the shock is compressed to the point where the recieving end is
distorted probably not. If it contains fluids (?) and it leaks... NO!
If it is a matter of the mount hardware being bent which is possible due to the crashbeam/box being pushed one way or another the answer is yes assuming you take the shock out and straighten the mount flange ears, and the body of the shock -you'll need to find a machine shop with a hydraulic press and 'V' blocks- if it is bent.
Possibly, the shock is bent slightly and the tube it runs thru is holding it in a compressed state.
Above all you have to remove it, and I believe the Crashbeam/box has to come off to do that. BTW if the beam has not been removed/loosened yet that would be another reason that the shock has stayed in a compressed state.
While you can loosen and 'MAYBE' drop the crashbox to remove the shock without disconnecting all the lights, if the box is deformed you are still going to have shock/shock guide tube alignment issues and possibly how the running/fog/turn signal lights "LOOK ' at the bumper cover/nose along with trim alignment. The box is symetrical from center to left, to right.
It is easy to visually detect a deformation by standing it on the left/right ends. This also can be fixed -depending on damage- quite easily.

Thank's everyone for helping. I will get the used bumper shock from Tim today. It cost $3 for two on e-bay, but I asked him to just ship one via UPS 2-day delivery.

It's about time I become a member for all the help I get here.

Oops. I just saw this thread. I do have two bumper shocks (as well as the front and rear bumper).

Let me know if anyone needs them.
