Default Brake pad squeal - age?

Hi.
1987 928 S4 Auto Euro.

My brakes have developed a squeal when I brake gently. (no noise on harder braking)
Last changed in 2017 but only done 20,000km and still have 8mm-10mm of pad.

Is this an age thing or something else?

Anything to check before I replace all pads?

Many thanks,
Robert.

I'm new to ownership, 86.5, 57k miles, my front brakes with original rotors ( some small grooves in one , pads were in thick good condition) did not squeak but did pulsate at minimal braking, did not when I was hard on the pedal. Just replaced the rotors and pads, amazing difference in pedal feel and stopping, hope this helps.

Did you fit new dampers? That or try greasing the back of the pads with some copperslip type grease.

If they develop a lip on the rotor, that can cause some "singing". Careful, these lips can be quite sharp.

Brake squel with lighter pedal pressure comes from the pad oscillating against the caliper pistons. I stick my pistons to the backside of the pads with the anti-squeal paste when doing brake jobs instead of just coating the pad, and it works great to keep them silent for the life of the pad.
