Dday830,

I think you will find that the radiator fan shroud is in two parts, an upper portion and a lower portion. If so, undo the screws at the top front and slide up and out the top portion. Then undo the lower screws and manoeuvre the lower portion down and out. This can be done (normally) without undoing either of the two large oil lines that go into the radiator side tanks. The radiator does not need to be removed to do the water pump or timing belt job. The thermofan does of course need to be removed - held on to the block with three long bolts.

hope this helps

Cant do that.....

Have another look at the photos. someone cut groves in the top side of the fan shroud and ran the piping over it....this locks the shroud in place without removing the entire pipe. Only way the top section now comes off is with the line removed.

I need to not ony want the shroud for the timming belt work but have to replace it as a tab is broken and I want to restore the intakes (rusted).

My preferance is to run the hoses as it left factory before doing so. know how they should look?

All the best,

DDay

would like to

DDay,
Congratulations on your find! as you see a bunch of us are pulling for you in the restoration of this 928!
The fan/radiator combination is one of the most unique modifications I have seen. At first blush I'm thinking that someone bought the wrong radiator and simply "Made it work".
With this level of creativity I'm hoping that this individual did not make too many other modifications! But almost all 928's have secret lives as owners try to keep them on the road with limits on their resources.
In any case we are here for you and hoping that you have all sorts of fun with your car.
Enjoy!

Thanks as always for the support.

Had a bit of time and now have the upper cam covers off.

I can now see the configuration of the Radiator and I found a fax order to the PZ ordering the original Radiator from them. What I do not understand is the Oil cooler connections are on the right passanger side. The Hoses have had brass extentions on then to mount to the other side. Why would it come wrong from Porsche, and why was it not sent back??? I do not know.

If you look at the photos below you will see the drivers side has circular markes where the fitting should be but are not. Not sure if I can add new fittings to the drivers side and get rid of this set up or Not?

Going the route of a new shroud and Rad is around 1300€ minimum if I replace the hoses as well (look ratty)

On my 84 Euro 5-speed, the oil cooler lines go into/out of the left (driver's side) side tank near the power steering reservoir. Below is a picture, as well as a picture of the engine out that partially shows them as they come out of the engine.

That‘s 20 years after production stop. Or someone ordered a later/wrong cooler. On our cars a lot of ppl were doing (stupid) thing's the last decades.

Thanks Darklands...I am thinking this is from an S4 as I believe the connections are on the otherside hence the Tim Burton job.

I found a used rad in Litauen for an 84 which has connections on both sides (assume one was for transmission cooler). Do you know if that was normal on Manuals to have connections for the oil/transmission cooler on both sides?

it has the shroud too and if its the right one I am going to go for it.

thanks,

David

Alright am down to taking off the drive shaft pulley...

Have hit a bit of a snag.

Just snapped a 17mm wrench and started to damage a line wrench (or the nut itsself) trying to get the dip stick out.

Its not moving, hope the PO did not use some kind of sealant.

Can I do the work with the dipstick in place or am I screwed?

thanks,

DDay

I wouldn`t buy an used radiator, high risk of failure.

I have this one :
On a manual you need only one side, left!

But purchased it before Brexit!

Progress at full stop.

Anyone had this problem? dip stick is siezed.

can i get the timming belt done without removing it? ( Does not look like it so asked and answered)

-one 17mm wrench snapped
-one 17mm Line Wrench started to strip
- new 17mm wrench to repace above started striping the nut

ordered one of these from amazon to try but looks dubious and not sure about it.

Amazon Amazon

any other suggestions whilst i have a bit of nut left to strip?

my last resort is cut it and then use and extractor socket. rather not because if that does not work i am in deep "Scheiße".

all the best,

dday

Try heating up the aluminum pan directly around the dipstick fitting with a propane or mapp torch. Aluminum expands faster than steel when heated, that will likely loosen the fitting enough to get it to unscrew.
