Default West German car in Trabi Garage

Many warm greetings to all from Teltow home of the annual Turnip Festival where our city Mascot is a Goat. (yes, its true right out of a Blackadder episode!)

thanks to this point to all for your counsel so far.

Today start I work on my 1984 S who had her last timing belt service in 2004 for over 40K km and has not moved more than 40km since 2014 and will photo document where I can.

I admire the Garage photos from US members and the opulant space. I have a house finished just as the wall fell which fits 2 cars lengthwise if they are both Trabbis or alternatively one of my other cars and my wife’s as long as she does not want anything longer than her mini.....In short I am doing this on my back in a closet....

Work to do:
  • timming belt/water pump/tesioner and all other bits on the way
  • all fluids changes
  • motor mounts (oild pan gasket is fine but why I am there...)
  • AC conversion R134
  • All fuel lines & Injector seals
  • Some unidentified oil leak in Manual Transmission (pics Sure to follow)
  • Leather restoration (pearl white where PO dyed some black and I will attempt to take off)
  • replace original Radio
  • replace Original Wheels
  • Restore and replace Original Steering Wheel.

The bottom hose is the Alternator cooling hose, but I'm not certain what the braided hose above it is. I haven't been inside a 928 engine bay in a while, so I'm sure someone will be along shortly to clarify! I definitely admire your resolve in such a small space! I get frustrated with a two car garage not having the space I want to work on the things I have.

For USA readers - Trabi = Trabbant

Folks do amazing things in small spaces, although it helps if you are Hobbit sized

For the alternator hose, you can look for alternatives by searching for duct hose. I believe it's a 60mm ID hose. I found some sources here in the US but I don't know how much good they'd do you. As an example, here is a typical source: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/du...ic/id~60-mm-1/

From memory, there are folks in the UK that have found sources in the EU, so perhaps searching for alternator hose posts here will help track that down.

Good luck

[QUOTE=PorKen;19491741]For USA readers - Trabi = Trabbant

thanks for the Dinglish translation (Deutsch+English)

looks like they had more room than me....my Turbo fits just fine with an on paper 1,5mm narrower width. however I needed to fold in the wing Mirrors to get the 928 in.

Scared the Scheisse (does German get passt the censors?) out of me doing it blind and my wife too who was guiding me. so much so I am NEVER doing it again until it is 100% done and ready for paint!

I would not have guessed the 996 Turbo to be that much "thinner", especially in the hips. My garage will be mostly complete once I can acquire another 928, and a 996 Turbo.

The hose with the braided cover looks like the external engine oil cooler hose. I'm pretty sure my US '79 and US '82 did not use an external oil cooler, and my US '88 does. I'm not sure why it was deemed necessary on the one but not the other. I don't know when i would have been used or not on a euro S car. Might also have been a 5 speed/manual difference. In the US, Roger has the hoses and they were not horribly expensive last I bought a set. My '88 auto also has external trans oil cooler up there with hoses coming forward. But that looks like engine oil cooler to me.

For scale purposes:

When I was in Bryce Canyon City, UT a few weeks ago I saw a Trabant (pretty abandoned looking) next to a van. So very small - really looked like a toy car!

Dear all,

I ran into a bit of a snag when removing the fan shroud I noticed it was held in by a pipe.

I thin kwhen the PO replace the radiator with one from BEHR he changed how the lines run and modified the shroud. I now need to remove the pipe to get the shrowd off.

my questions:
  1. What it this line?
  2. What does it look like when it is originally set up and how do the hoses run?
  3. can the original configuration be restored?
When I remover the two bolts on the shroud one of the plastic tabs fell off so I will need to replace. I would prfer not to buy a replacment and slice it up to acomodate this pipe if I can help it.

thanks for any wisdom.

DDay

The radiator looks stock to me? - the oil cooler connections are bizarre though. Good work on the cooling duct & printed “U” this was a crappy original idea from Porsche’s B-team. It should always have been mounted to the body! Don’t worry about water - the duct doesn’t flow enough to actively suck in much and the alternator is designed to get wet. If the hose is sucking liquid water you have a much much bigger problem, and the alternator would already be underwater! Great project in a tiny space!

PS Ideally the U could also include the temp sensor to simplify the whole design and remove extra clamps and rigid sections of hose for easier routing. Functionally this would make no difference at all.

Alan,

thnaks...Funny was in Phoenix two weeks ago and meet up with Jack Doverspike whilst there.

My poor coice of words, it could be stock Radiator but I know it was replaced in a garage by the previous owner:

Here are some more pictures below, as you see one hose is held to the side wall on the drivers side and the other end of the pipe crosses the front of the Radiator and attaches to the top of the pasangers side. Slots were cut in the fan shroud to accomidate this set up.

What should it look like if done correclty and how do I get it back?
I Have ´never seen the correct layout as a comparison.
Nor do I understand why that was done like this??????

Do these Photos give a more clear picture?

Thnaks,

DDay

Wow - that is even more bizarre than I thought! No idea what the thought process was there. Depending on year both, one or neither side tanks are used for oil / trans cooling. Is that a means to get both side tanks in series?
