I suggest a good shelving system for removed parts. Boxes and baggies clearly marked as parts come off. Keep a log to stay organized and lots of pictures.
Hope you have room in front of the car for the engine hoist and then the engine stand.
You can do this!!
Absolutely ! I buy a couple of boxes of Ziploc baggies. Every bit of hardware is put into a bag and labeled carefully, same with wiring, fittings, etc.
Also, take a bunch of pics for each step.
2nd vote for early oilsump/windage setup.....3/8th spacer isn't a bad idea either. That is the setup I ran on my lemons racer with NO OIL COOLER and the engine lasted 276 hours on track!
Oil Control will be a primary goal for this motor. Specifically, it should be kept out of the combustion chamber from above (breather) or below (rings). Drainback holes in the pistons were previously discussed and on the plan. I am definitively planning on using the oil pan spacer and windage trays for the crank. I will implement all the necessary baffles; I have the OFN baffles, the cam cover baffles, and the most updated breather lines. Regarding which sum design to use, I see in the comments above GB mentioned the early one is better, yet in a 1:1 conversation he mentioned the GTS version was just fine when used with the spacer. I'll double-check on this point. Keep the feedback coming
Subscribed. I'm really interested in seeing the conditions of the head gaskets and crank bearings.
My GTS engine has done more than double of the mileage (175 kmiles) and uses no oil. I was thinking of doing some preventive maintenance on mine too, but it just runs very well with all the upgrades.
Schocki - Not bottom end - but my GTS with 185K has just had new cam chains & new tensioner/guides fitted - needed them both. Fortunately cams still look very good. Yours may be similar unless you’ve had them done already. I think I already replaced the tensioner/guides once before. Micheal I’d expect you’d only need tensioners at most.

I haven't replaced the tension guides yet. I have spares in my parts collection. I'll inspect and replace it as needed. Engine extraction happens on Saturday, and we hope to have the motor disassembled on Sunday. Hopefully, I can get @PorKen and @Zirconocene to help out a burrito or two

My tensioner guides were replaced in 2006 when I did a complete maintenance job and again with the GT cam conversion 2017. Better safe than sorry 5-8 also with old guides 1-4 the guides in both pictures show the "old" parts from 2005.
We made a ton of progress yesterday. List members @Zirconocene, @PorKen , and Mick all came over at various times to lend a hand, which I am extremely grateful. We had the engine out of the car and on the stand in short order.
The bolts holding the cam caps were crazy tight. One of the triple square heads is striped, fortunately, I had an excellent extractor
Here is your PSA folks! Change your original head gaskets! These head gaskets are in fair condition; they were disintegrating in several places. This motor has 70K miles on it and has well-documented frequent coolant changes. Both were in similar condition.
I'll clean these up so you can see more detail
Here is the pitting damage to the cam lobs that is common to GTS motors. Most of the cam lobs have some degree of pitting. I am assuming this means new cams will be required.
More disassembly will happen today. I plan to get the pistons out and then measure the runout and play of the crank.
@Zirconocene (aka Glen) took a bunch of photos of the head gaskets. They were in terrible condition and crumbling all over the place, failing in several places and on the verge of total collapse. This 1992 motor has done 70k miles and has lots of coolant changes throughout its history. Nothing to indicate aggressive aging. So all of you folks with original head gaskets, be forwarded!
How do I remove this pulley from the bracket so i can yellow zinc the bracket?
How do I remove the crank sprocket? The wood-drift key is stuck in there good and there is no space between the sprocket and the thrust washer. I cant figure out how to get in there.
