Well, both my cars need some work and I'll have zero time for the next several months and I have given up in disgust on my old mechanics. Anybody have a wrench they can recommend in the Pasadena or northern Los Angeles area?

Hey Karl,
I recommend Strictly German/Pasadena Performance. Call (626) 440-1242 and ask for Duran (tell him Dan sent ya). They see a lot of 928s and are very reasonable. They're at 2435 E. Colorado Blvd.

They'll do a good job for you considering the price and whatnot. I have heard two stories over the last 2 years from sharksters who did not have the best possible experience there, but not really enough for me to stop recommending them.

If you demand the absolute best in Southern California 928 wrenching, then best cut to the chase and take it over to Greg at Precision Motorwerks in Anaheim.

I'll try Strictly German and see how it goes. My '82 has another broken front ball cup on the shift linkage (2nd or 3rd time this has happened over the years) and the car is stuck in 2nd. Anaheim would be a long drive in 2nd gear. Besides, if he is a perfectionist he might puke on my car.

don't think greg is a perfectionist, but he does have a good working knowledge of what is ok from a practical perspective....does seem to have HP and motor building down to a routine, but for minor work, he might be overkill....if you are having a chronic problem, however - he's the one to figure out why...

considering the dealers out here charge $110.00/hr, greg is not so bad, and if he can fix it right the 1st time, you are $$$ ahead.....

monaco motors in canoga park is ok for general repairs, a bit less $$$...

When I want help with my 928s I take them to Greg Brown. Have for years. No one knows 928s like he does. He does insist on doing it right and that might seem to cost more upfront but if you want the car to be reliable and perform as it should he is the guy.

Welcome to the group and to the SG/SFV area. We are almost neighbors.

Finding a 928-saavy wrench in the area is getting harder as time goes on. A Burbank local had a guy over there whom he liked, but his car was sold to make room for a C2 cab. Most of the same tools are used but the methods are slightly different.

You almost need to interview a shop and see if you are comfortable with them. Check for stupid stuff like a set of workshop manuals, and a belt tensioning tool for instance. As well as an apparent knowledge of the cars.

Jules Hauer at Hauer's on Sepulveda in Van Nuys knows the cars well and is pretty reasonable per folks who take their cars to him. It's a bit of a hike from Pasadena, though. If you want the best, Greg Brown at Precision Motorwerx in Anaheim is your guy. You can catch the train home from Fullerton Station.

Actually I did make an appointment with precision but canceled cause I got a tensioner warning light (am still waiting for the kempf tool online) so am afraid of driving 30 mi to Anaheim. Just wondering if anyone's had any experience with Scientific which is just down the street. I know forsure timing belt changed within the last year, last 4k miles. Previous owner(s) both retensioned.

I see reviews on the other RL forums but I see no anecdotes from sharksters.

Hi Sdfin.
I have not had any 928s in pasadena for a few years, so my info is probably out of date. Would not go back to strictly german. I had them replace the steering rack and it went OK except that they gave the back the key and let me drive away with the lug nuts loose. After that (what IS that clunking noise) I felt is was necessary to take the car home, put it on stands, and go through the whole thing myself to make sure there was nothing else wrong.

Some info--

The Continental belts are reputed to be more rubber-band than drive belts sometimes. They do stretch more than the others. You can pull a cover and see if that's part of the problem.

928 International in Anaheim has the tool if you want to buy one. I have one in Glendale to borrow if you want to test/adjust the belt you have now. The same cover comes off for tensioning as for checking for the Conti belt. You can adjust it some to make it safer to drive, and re-book your appointment with Greg. Needs to be done engine cold or I'd invite you to bring the car and do it for you. I'm above the 2/134 intersection.
