Lots of bigger pictures are linked to the thumbnail-sized pics.

Once I get the interior all back together I'll do a 'centerfold' shot. Who needs words anyway??

Thanks for documenting and sharing your experience and work
Thanks JV.

BTW, I hear a rumour 'on the street' that there are two pair of MB Quart PCE210s (4", tweeter, crossover) new-in-the-box available at a very fair price. Interest expressed here might draw a PM (but not from me.)

Dave,

While you've got the interior gutted, consider putting down a sound deadener if you haven't already.
Brown Bread is just as good as Dynomat Extreme and less expensive.
Go to http://www.b-quiet.com/ and check it out. I put it in my 79 and it made a huge difference.
I haven't got to the doors yet but I hear they make the biggest difference in our cars.

Thought I would give this thread a bump as i am now trying to figure out what is the best way to mount the crossovers and where to put them.

Dave,

How did you end up mounting the crossovers in the door? In the page you mentioned making brackets, you dont have pics of these do you. I was looking at the Pics Ed posted and think i will try one of those "1 1/2 inch L brackets" Any idea where to get these? I suppose Home Depot would have something but i would love to know what section of the store they would be in? What are they used for? Is this a part used for wood work i assume? Details?

The speaker setup I am using for the rear is a bit more complex. The Q speakers use a third crossover when you add the 6.5" woofers to the 2 rear channels. I thought it was odd when i first saw it, but i guess it works. I wish they simply supplied a 3 way crossover though so i have to find places in the rear for only 2 x-overs instead of 3. Still debating on where to mount all these crossovers. With the Infinity Basslink in the rear I now have more space in the spare tire well to put all 3 rear crossovers if I like. The Basslink fills less space in the spare well then would the sub enclosure i was previously trying to install does, although it is taller. Also i was thinking i could remove the jack (which is useless isnt it?) and try and fit 2 crossovers in that area right next to the passenger side tail lamp.

My main concern right now is how to actually mount the crossovers in the doors. I had thought about Velcro but x-over is never flat on the panel so a bracket maybe a better solution. I know the x-overs dont need to be in there solid like a speaker does or, I was also trying to think of a way to use zip ties to hold them in. But I like the bracket idea best, just need to know where to go to find an appropriate bracket.

It's been a long time....

IIRC I did get two bits of "L Bracket" at the local h/w store. I bolted the bracket to the panel just like the factory x-over was bolted and then bolted the MBQ x-over to the bracket. It was pretty straightforward. The main trick is to get the x-over in just the right spot in the panel.

If you look at http://members.rennlist.com/worf928/...-panel-big.jpg you can see a tiny bit of the bracket sticking out.

yeah i did see that but i wasnt sure what you did if you made a bracket or just bought one.

So it was an L bracket though.

What part of a store would i find that in? Would that be with hinges and stuff?

Thought I would bump this and update this thread.

Install went great, the L brackets did just the ticket. They mounted up very solidly to the doors in the end, i was surprised how solid they with the door now with the crossovers bolted to brackets and brackets mounted to the studs moulded into a cardboard panel.

I have all new wiring on the fronts now as well and spent probably 8 hours in total wiring the fronts, including making new very nice harness for the crossover to woofer and tweeter connections. I also goofed around allot with different connectors before ending up with 14 gauge spade connectors for #8 stud for the crossover connections, 14 gauge spades for #6 screw for the 4" woofers and .187" (or the one smaller) female slip gold plated connectors to wire the tweeters as the included slip connectors from MB-Quart wouldnt fit the maybe too large 14 gauge tweeter wire.

The finished product

Now to figure out the rear's and fix the warped leather quarter panels.......it never ends!

Where do you get that flexible harness cover material in bulk?

EDIT: BTW, Nice setup on the door.

good eye! THAT MATERIAL IS AWESOME! In hindsight i got one size to big but i love it, its like a chinese finger trap and looks SO much better then that split loom crap.

Fry's has it, they had 3-4 different sizes as well and they come in 10 foot lengths. It wasn't cheap, but i think worth it. Especially if you have under hood wiring to fool around with, it would look very nice. I think it was $8 - $10

Also

My tweeter's mounted very easily and i havent seen these in other MB-quart threads. The polk tweeters were mounted in Porsche mounts which are directional and point the tweeter to the listener. Previously ive seen these mounted flush with the door panel and thus directed towards the dash.

FWIW, I actually intentionally directed my tweeters away from the listeners. I found mine to be way too bright when aimed at the listener and experimented with different aimings. I'd encourage you to do the same.

That said, I found the tweeters to be really impressive; cymbals in jazz music really sound great!

do your crossovers allow you to adjust the decimal level?

mine have a 0 level, -3db, and -6db but they are set at 0 and i dont hear anymore sound coming from the tweeters then i do the woofers. I dont have a tuned ear so not entirely sure how they should sound honestly. I should have an audiophile sit in the car and listen and play with the Multi EQ in the head unit. Although i do plan on using the new Alpine Imprint system when it becomes available in a month or 2. Only after doing that will i bother with trying to "tune" the setup.

I cant mount the tweeters flush with the doors, no way i was so excited when i found out how easily the MB's mounted into that nice porsche mount. You will have to work hard to convince me that a tweeter shouldnt be directed at me. Please try it though, i'm all ears.

IIRC, the factory has the front tweeters directed towards the dash (and glass.)

I could be wrong but that's what I remember.

Fry's doesn't help me here in Yankee Land. Does that stuff have a name (so I can google it?)
