Congratulations! I wish I had 'only one'...

..the 440 4speed Challenger
I had a 1970 440 Magnum 4-speed Challenger, no six-pack unfortunately. For wheels, I had the solid aluminum Centerlines front and rear with 50 series 'Kelly Superchargers' on the back! Talk about dating oneself...

The inspiration to buy one came after seeing the movie 'Phantasm' where the good guys had this beautiful 1971 Cuda (..not sure of the engine). It had the shark-face grill, and I think the 'shaker hood' too. To this day, I think the '71 Cuda is one of the baddest looking cars ever produced.

My buddy had an official Mark Donahue Javelin (..1970?) complete with plaque on the dashboard; that was a nice ride for sure.

My Daughter and Son -in-law have most of the cool cars ....I only get to work on them , buff , polish , paint and occasionally drive ......... some of the other cars are movie rental cars .....an old VW Thing to be parked on the street as background earns $250 per day , exotics (Porsche) $500 But if driven it becomes much more . The 65 Vette fastback is being Gran Sport cloned it already has flairs just needs the scoops , hood , big header side pipes and headlight covers etc. wheels tires .......

hey, under $14k, and 330 rear wheel hp, that sounds like a good deal, plus, low mileage is a plus. However, hows the handling and what do you need to do to turn it into a race car. the 928 is revalve the shocks, add a swaybar and go. some vets need quite a bit more.
so, what is a '96GS??

I still think, for what ive seen in speed GT, as well as in club racing (SCCA) there is no better bang for the buck than the 928. not even close.

still trying to figure out what a GS is.

All this plus a car with under 40k for $13,000. I'm not trying to say he'd be faster than you Mark, but it's one hell of a track car for the money.

not really, unless it could have 3-4 race seasons on it too!!
just tooling around town, any car will last a million miles if the oil is changed frequently.

Im talking a few hours at redline every month!!

If so, 93%+ on all eight cylinders.

Religeous oil changes at 3,000 mile intervals using exclusively SWEPCO 10w-40 oil (..no affiliation).

Valve guides/seals must be slightly worn since it burns about a quart in that time.

Mark - GS = Grand Sport
In 96 they made about 1,000 GS Corvette's, all blue with white stripes and the red stripes on the fender. Black ZR-1 wheels with fender extensions in the rear. In stock form they would out run ZR-1's at the track. Chevy claimed the mods were pretty tame but some of the GS's that have been torn down show they were befier than advertised. Some think the LT-4 engine dropped into the GS was the test mule for the next ZR-1/ZO6 motor. Then they scrapped that motor for the LS1/LS6 series. It was an expensive limited edition considering they only made them one year.

My friends car is the "collectors editon" same as the GS but in Silver instead of the blue and white. His father founded Corvette Sports in the 70's:
www.corvettesports.com
so racing anything else isn't really an option (his is the silver car in the pic) For the price, he got the car with a set of hot cams (not sure on the brand) lengenfelter heads & cold air intake. B&B shifter (wish the 928 had this smooth of a trannie) Corsa exhaust with headers. Two sets of wheels, one with new heat cycled slicks. I was about to write the guy a check on the spot for the car last fall (at the PCA weekend) when a little voice (girlfriend) talked me out of it, so I passed the deal on to my friend.

Reason why the car was so cheap is it ran for sh*t. He did no tuning or computer work after installing all the mods. It was a gamble I was willing to take. The 330rwhp was after some tuning but still running very lean. Considering that motor is rated for 330bhp, putting that much to the wheels isn't bad.

Mods for the track? The last few C4's, especially the GS's are already beafed up. His also came with a coil over setup and bigger sway bars. He's added a cabin brace w/5-points. Once my SC is installed, that's the car I'll be up against most weekends.

Cool. Actually, if we get out of my garbage can tire and shared sandwitches mode, the Z06 is phenominal! there is a guy that is racing with us this weekend in our SCCA ITE race. all the guy did was a set of headers and a aftermarket cam. guess what.................? 410 at the rear wheels. The guy ever learns to drive the darn thing, as it should be driven, and he is going to be dangerous. (fast). right now, this is his first race season, and a really nice guy after beating up the car in the solo 1/2 ranks. but heck, just a set of headers and a cam and 410rwhp!!!!!!!!

only problem, they cost $30k used . so, the ole bang for the buck stays with the 928

I'm proud of the fact that my dad sold his Corvette when he learned that my mom was pregnant with me. I'm not proud of the fact that he sold a silver '63 split-window coupe, however!

-That's probably the only Corvette I've ever liked. The ZO6's can do amazing things, and I bet you feel "amazing" as you manipulate the chevy cavalier switch gear while driving one of these things.

That points out one of gm's biggest problems: no class! I'll buy a Chevrolet when they start building them again.

Styln928: You shouldn't feel so inferior; your Euro S makes 300 net BHP. This works out to about 350 gross BHP....which is what the old cars were rated in. Tell me about the 285 cubic inch chevy small block that made 350 hp from the factory...

oh yeah. now, a subject on which i have been there and back. used to have an 81 auto, 90 auto, 92 ZO7 6-sp, and finally, a 91 ZR-1 6-sp (obviously). the thing about these cars is that chevy constantly changed the spring rates and sway bar diameters throughout the early 90's (the C4's). i think the consensus was that the setup on the 91's was the strongest for high speed track use. i have to say that i enjoyed the 92 the most, it was a speed-density system instead of a hot-wire MAF. she was affectionately known as "madonna" and had manual seats, adjustable dampening shocks and CD only. absolutely sweet. the ZR-1 on the other hand, i later discovered, was a theft recovered car with a reman ZF tranny that had been smashed during it's felonious journey. at that point i just wanted OUT. it was recovered with a groid behind the wheel who was taken into custody. all this car was good for was getting drunk and doing 135 on 2 lane country roads. it was fun but thankfully it got sold. the one thing that i did notice was that even though it was an injected engine, when those secondary runners opened it was not a seamless deal and felt like secondaries opening on a 4 barrel carb. that engine was a real piece of engineering and manufacturing and i am sure that now spares are hard to find. of course, they were assembled by good 'ole okies! GO SOONERS!
