Default Shark is Down in PA

I'm writing this from a Super-8 motel in Clearfield, Penssylvania. Yesterday on the drive home from picking up the car in Rhode Island, my new 928S died on I-80 and wouldn't restart. The car cranks fine, the battery is good, it just doesn't seem to be getting gas (despite my filling up only miles before). I suspect the DME relay for the EFI died on me. Does that seem probable? If so, I'll have one FedExed in and try to get out of here tomorrow. If anyone from PA is reading this and knows where I can get a relay from today, that'd be great! I'll rent a car and go get one (or two).

Also, if there's anything else I can/should check, please let me know.

I haven't tried swapping the relays, but I did just about all the fiddling I could do without any tools or manuals on my 2nd day of ownership (surprisingly a lot, considering I had hours to try). I'll check on the thread you mentioned.

What's the model year of your car?

It may be something as simple as a bad fuel pump FUSE - check the owner's manual for the location and type.

It's a 1983 928S. I went over all the fuses, since I happened to have some with me. All were fine. I also suspect the relay because I could swear I heard a sort of clicking from that area earlier in the trip, like a flasher relay but quieter. The passenger side speaker is fried and I was getting some pops and crackles from that area.

The horn (or fresh air blower) relay for fuel pump relay swap applies to US MY85-on. The relays are different in early cars and there does not appear to be an exact swap in MY83 for the fuel pump or fuel injection relays.

Fuel injection (XVI) 928.615.119.00
Fuel pump (XVII) 928.618.113.01

Horn (X) 141.951.253.B

However, did you try a jumper wire? Pull the relay and bridge 30 to 87 on the panel (the posts are marked on the relay). I carry a makeshift jumper wire in the glovebox. All you need is some 16 gage wire. Nice if you put a small spade connector on each end. If you want to get fancy you can mount a switch in the wire to make it easy to disable/enable.

MY83 fuel pump fuse is #22.

I'm guessing fuel pump or fuel pump relay. Common problem.

Well, I'm packing to head out again. I called 928 International to have the parts Fed-Exed to me and spoke to a genius there by the name of Jim. Following his instructions, I was able to jury-rig the fuel pump relay by wedging some paper in it to hold the contacts in the always-on position. Car fired right up. My cellular dropped the call while we were talking, but if you haven't checked your voice mail - THANKS JIM! And thanks for everyone else in the thread for their suggestions and ideas. Talk to you all after another 500 miles or so.

I love it when a plan comes together. Yay for the A Team.
Damn, I get a good feeling just reading this thread. How cool does it get? The internet rescues the day.

Who's Jim?

...and I'm back in Chicago, tired but happy and still quite pleased with the car. The window switches stopped working on the way, as well as the radio, but the PO mentioned these were intermittent issues and I look forward to clearing up the little things ala Thaddeus over the next few days/weeks.
