Question Any tips on things to check...

Hi all,

Ive got my 928 s (83-4.7L) booked in at 928 Specialist (UK) end of January.

My question is, what should be the top "safety and reliability" things to have checked by them?

Car has been combed through and everything seems to be working well but my mechanic has become awfully disinterested and doesn't seem to have his head in the game for the last two years so I don't trust his advice anymore though his work is solid. I also don't want to drop the car off at specialist with no guidelines or checklist if that makes sense.

Condition of fuel hoses, condition of high pressure power steering line, condition of hard fuel line in right rear wheel arch, ride height, alignment, condition of all accessible ground points, condition of engine ground cable, state of brake fluid, condition of flexible brake hoses, bleed brakes.

Pull the cover for the fuel pump and make sure that there are no fuel leaks, in this area. If you don't have a service history on the fuel filter, this might be a good time to change it.
Finally, in this area, make sure that some prior idiot didn't clock the fuel pump so that the power wire contacts the cover....the power wire must be clocked towards the plastic tank (this is an amazingly common issue!)

If the car is a CIS Euro S it*s important the vacuum system, especially the ignition advance system is correct working.

How do you check the condition of the high pressure lines? They may crack on the outside, but the inside liner is what fails.

I would say if they look OE, replace them outright.

If they’re 928 specialists they will know what to check, just ask them for a full inspection and recommendations for what’s urgent.

Ask for the list of empty pockets, this service is in most 928 shops free!

We will spend a minimum of 4 hours (with both me and my son looking) a new client's car over.

We spend a bit more time with both pre-purchase and post purchase inspections.

There's generally an almost an infinite variety of things to find that prior idiots have done wrong.

Fuel seepage/leaks are so common, in this area, that I believe the vast majority of 928's which get worked on, in this area, get the cover re-installed, before anyone looks for leaks.

The cover, quite literally, is one of the last items to be installed, in our shop.

And a full 25% of the cars we see, for the first time, have the positive cable protective boot SMASHED into the cover.

Agreed!
But on the other hand, Jochen told me recently, if a lucky customer has only a list with 10.000 € work the car is in remarkably good condition.
So if the customer visit the shop year by year to work on the problems from high to low priority the inspection is the rounding error.
A lot of people can‘t work on their own cars.
