Default Distributor rotor alignment

Should both distributor rotors point in the same direction? I took off my rotors to turn my camshafts to reinstall my timing belt, and didn't take a picture of the alignment of the right one.

Thanks,

Yes they should, you can only install them in one direction, the screws on the rotors are offset.

they are both the same, both slightly turned towards the middle.

I just ttook mine off yesterday to retension the belt.

I took a close look at the contacts and it looked like some sort of carbon builup on them. I cleaned it, was that a mistake?

regards,
Sab.

I clean the carbon from the distributers reletivly regulary. It's a way to keep from haveing to replace the distributer cap every so often. If you didn't clean it, the junk would build up, and then it wouldn't conduct the electricty needed for the spark plug. You just can't get too agressive, and remove to much copper with it. That throws the gap between the distributer and the rotors out of wack, and then it doesn't work right.

Thanks, all. I was relieved to find that Chris is correct -- the screws are offset, though the only way I could see it was by holding one rotor up to the other.

At 45º, the distributor rotors both pointed to about 7:30. (At the other 45º, I guess they'd point to 1:30.)
