Default R and R 1980 Flywheel

1980's ring gear is not on the flywheel.

How does one counter hold the flywheel to remove and then torque the bolts?

12 mm XZN socket on an impact gun, zip that bugger right off. For torquing get a long threaded M8 bolt and run it through one of the PP mounting bolt holes so it sticks into one of the engine block web castings as a 'hold'.

That's brilliant!

I have the correct XZN sockets and Ryobi 1/2" impact gun. The TT is already moved back.

Thanks!

It's off and sure enough the seal is leaking.

It's weeping from the seal.

pilot bearing needs to be replaced its got rust
NOTE to hold the flywheel,
make a metal strap,
a hole in either end
bolt one end to the flywheel pp hole ,
then the other to the starter bracket.

After three cans of brake clean.

You can see the oil leak

Lots of rust

New seal in place.

I leave the seal .5mm proud.

YMMV

did you replace the pilot bearing?
odds are good if you didnt then it will have a short service life.
As its been subject to corrosion and then cleaning fluid,
this will wash the grease out of the bearing as well as wash rust into the bearing.

Next time, try mineral spirits - works great!

I buy it by the gallon at Home Depot.

Not subject to corrosion - you can see that in the pictures. Pixie rust dust on the face - that's it.

The pilot bearing is perfect. I did not wash it out. I compared it to new ones I have. Identical feel. Spins smoothly.
