Default Sunroof switch question

When i press the "shut" part of the switch, the sunroof starts closing, but it stops moving when i take my finger off the button.
When i press the "open" part of the switch, if i just hold it briefly and release, it only moves whilst i am pressing it. However, if i press and hold (and then release) it continues opening, And when it is fully open, you can hear that the motor does not stop. At this point, i quickly and briefly press the "shut" to stop it.

Is this normal behaviour? If not, what do i do to fix it.
I did remove the switch today and gave it a splash of Contact Cleaner just in case that would help, but no change.

Its a sticky switch, it should always stop when you stop pressing.

Some later cars (at least) have the same effect on the sunroof as the window switch has on the window - one touch opens it completely. Most do not do one touch closing due to the possibility of something/someone getting caught in the process.

I have the same issue in my 1992 MY. The express open feature with the motor run-on.

I have done some research and there are several posts about a "clutch" failure. I dont remember the specifics but scan through this search result: site:rennlist.com inurl:928 sunroof clutch.

As Speedtoy said, it’s a sticky switch. My passenger side window switch does the exact same thing. Push it and the window goes down all the way. You still need to click it to stop it, or else it’ll keep sending current to the motor.. I just live with it and make sure I stop it at the bottom.

What Speedtoys said..the switch is sticking. More particularly it is physically "hanging up" on the switch insert panel until you click the other side.
Look closely and you wil see what we are tlking about. You can jiggle or move the switch around in its insert until it is not catching up on the frame.

Other posts..the 928 switches do not have an auto-up or auto-down one-touch option. It seems like it is one-touch, but what is really happening is as the OP and I've described.
There can be sunroof motor clutch issues, but that is not what is described. (You eventually create a clutch issue if you are treating a stuck switch as one-touch and not stopping it after the sunroof closes...the motor keeps running and the clutch burns up.)

Interesting, thanks for the thoughtful explanation. If the switch is the culprit then would a reasonable validation test be to swap it with one of the window switches to see if the problem goes away? It would seem the passenger window one-touch functions the same as the sun roof.

There is nothing wrong with the switch, so changing it is not the fix. Its not the switch's fault...it is literally just getting hung up on the tight fit into the frame. Pull the switch out and up from the panel frame but leave it connected and operate it in your hand. and you will see that it operates fine. Now, when you reinstall see if you can push it home and "set" it in such a way that it is not touch/binding the frame hole such that it is binding

Agree with the above. I have a problem on my 87 due to a broken plastic “lift” tab for the insert in the console making the switch fit crooked a bit and bind. Adjustment makes it work perfect.
