Doesn't Devek use a plate? Why not get a recommendation from them for their machine shop. Ship the block, or drive it down? Would want the machine shop to have the pistons too for measurements.

Yep...pistons needed for matching. Also need the lower girdle/web portion of the block as well.

Hi Dan,

Yes Devek does use a plate. I believe that 928 Developments (Phil Threshie) uses them also. I'm really trying to keep my block local if at all possible and avoid having to crate it up and ship it out somewhere. To be honest with you, I don't know if either do machine shop service for projects that they aren't building. My guess would be that they have their hands full enough getting their own projects done (see posts about long turn around time from machine shops elsewhere on rennlist) that it may not be worthwhile for them to take on a bore job for a motor they aren't building.

I've had my block and pistons in the hatch of my integra for the past few days now, and I'm thinking it's time to just drop them off and do the nasty.

Adam just to clarify ... Devek has sent out the blocks they have had bored and honed . Just as they do not own a dyno but rent one , they pay to have their machine work done since they do not have the equipment . Not that there is anything wrong with that ...... Engine Dynamics in Garden Grove Ca . ( 714) 636-3280 here in Southern California has bored many 928 Blocks . Point of interest the alusil Cheyenne block is a closed deck design (no free standing cylinders) and is cast and fully machined by Kolben Schmidt ...."all " that Porsche does is ASSEMBLE the engine .

Do they use bored through heads too? Nothing wrong with that either....well maybe there is! Anyway, there are plenty of good machine shops in California that do all sorts of exotic work and enjoy it. You can always call Sunnen in St. Louis and ask them for a recommended shop who has bought some of their latest greatest engine refinishing products.

Good luck

Just hadmy block bores "cleaned up" with new lapping, etc, for 280 bucks at motorworks in San Diego. They do alot of the Mercedes Alusil stuff, so we will see how that goes. I was told I did not need to increase the piston size - but I will be coating them from Swain.

IIRC, the 928 block was done by Mahle (perhaps it was Kolben, getting foggy...) anyway, the 928 engine was the same story. All finish machine work outsourced, just the assembly done by the Stutt-folk.

The open deck design was to save $ on the casting. Much simpler (and cheaper) to cast than a closed deck design.
