Default Need Help Identifying part

I am troubleshooting an electrical gremlin on a 78 928. What are these two relays. They were taped with electrical tape and stuffed under the fuse panel.

Thanks

Those look like remnants of a PO audio/security install. They don't appear to be factory items.

I would check the circuits they are connected to and remove if possible.

Do you have an aftermarket alarm or stereo?

HTH,
Scott

Definitely weren't put there by Porsche. Check my Bzzzzt page for a view of an unmolested 78 fuse panel. Well, unmolested till I got my hands on it

Well, That is my gremlin. I started the car and unplugged the big relay and it died. Same symptoms as the problem it will start when turned over then die when you release the key. I followed the wires back and they had tapped the wire that powers the coil.

A very *interesting* way to do starter interrupt. BTW, that method is extremely amateurish..... Proceed with caution on all other things electrical as there may be more gremlins lurking.

What about the second relay? What is its function?

Good luck

Ideally, I think you would be best off following all non-original wires end-to-end, restore everything to original as best you can make out, then begin troubleshooting from there. I have much higher resolution versions of all the pics I took... if you see any of those on my site that would be helpful to you, let me know which & I'll post.

Thanks for the offer. The large relay breaks the current to the coil. The little relay switches the big one on and off. I found where they spliced (cut in two) the wire that runs from the key through the fuse box to the coil and reconnected it like it was when it left the factory
