Default 722.3 Transmission Shift Rod Seal Replacement

Hi All,

During my service, we noticed that there is a slight ATF seeping behind the transmission neutral safety switch which indicates that the seal for the shift rod is probably not sealing well anymore. I was wondering if the rod can be removed with the transmission in the car.

Hi khalloudy!

I did this job with the transmission upside down on my work bench. I believe it can be done with the transmission in the car. Pan has to come off, filter and complete valve body come off.

Here it is, upside down.

Selector shaft circled in green.

Getting the shaft out to replace the seal is fiddly work, but quite doable.

Good Luck!

Should be possible during an ATF change.

I am sure it is a million times easier on a workbench but dropping the transmission is not an option for now… until I do a larger job planned down the road. the pic you provided is great as it will help me plan and navigate the work.

Slightly off topic, but having spent some time staring at a different valve body on a different Porsche, they remain very little short of black magic to me.

Good luck with the repair, I'm interested to see how it goes for you as I'm sure I'll have to do this myself, some time in the future.

Cheers

khalloudy, I never suggested you drop the transmission. I was just showing you that I did it for perspective. And since all the parts are inside the case, you should be able to do it with the transmission in the car.
Drop the pan, drop the filter, drop the complete valve body, and you then have access to the selector shaft.

Good Luck!

Seth,

Yes I totally got it… just saying you were lucky to have the transmission out as many tidying up could be done on the bench. I hope this reduces more the number of parasitic leaks I have… kinda got them to a minimum now
