progress and question
the tranny is done! YEAH
the new bearings and synchros are in(all the gear sets are in great shape) and everything is back in the car (also found a crack in one of the rotors so swapped those out w/new), getting alignment done this am and I should be good to go (now if I can just avoid the temptation to race any more vettes I'll be in good shape)
now,
I took the opportunity to take a better look at the rear suspension while it was out... it has coilovers in the back but not in the front and the front end sits a good 3" too high, I've purchased a replacement set of boge front shocks from another rennlister but just not sure this is going to solve my problem, I would love to add coilovers to the front but I'm thinking maybe just the new shocks and an original set of springs as the fronts don't look like they belong on this car... given this cars early vintage, could someone at the factory actually have set the car up like this to begin with?
I was just wondering because the more I deal with this car the more unlike any other 78 it becomes ie, the car has no ac (and never has), it doesn't have the rear storage just a console (I thought this was basically an 80-82 option) and on and on
any thoughts or suggestions are GREATLY appreciated as always

PS is anyone in the Raleigh area has some extra time and wants to help me get the interior somewhat back together for SITM it would be awesome

the 78-79 928 had a much higher front ride height . The fronts got adjuster nuts and threaded sleeves in mid 83 as I recall , all rear shocks have height adjustment . A/C was an option as was sunroof .
thanx everyone but I feel like I'm going down the same road over and over, while I trust my mechs they just seem kinda lost on this one, ie "it's standard equipment I don't get it" "go to coilovers" it's only $XXXXXXX I'm almost concerned some cop is going to think I'm running moonshine...
oh well, I'll figure it out somehow... keep the suggestions/comments/or even total frustration with my attempts coming it can only help
in the meantime if anyone has original coilovers they are willing to slide me cheap so I can get it right let me know

Rixter,
Maybe you simply have the wrong part in there. I'm concerned that you say there is no coilover. Can you get in there, turn the wheel maybe, and get a pic? Also measure from the lower shock eye to the lower spring perch and measure from the lower shock eye to the upper mount. Do this with the car on the ground. Look for any significant differences between what you have and this:
I'm not absolutely certain that what you see above is all as-delivered from the factory, but it works pretty darn good and gives me a ride height that I can live with:
Did you add the front spoiler yourself or was that a PO?

Thanx again
car came into the US in 85 with spoilers already on it... front is coming off this weekend if I get the chance.. rear doesn't look bad so it's staying on for now

Rixter,
I'd susspect that if the front spoiler is attached as they are on the "s" model cars, you'll have some small holes in the fendor lip that won't look real nice. Unless the intallation ws done in some unique way you may just want to leave the front spoiler on. Besides. it Really Hard to get on and off... - Ruf

ok.. I got her today and she shifts like a dream night and day w/ new bearings/synchros
it appears as though she settled about 1/2" lower than before, I'll post more tomorrow when I get the chance, here is what she looked like when I took her so you can get a better idea of the whole deal, please disregard the low res it was the only way I could get the whole side in w/out reloading photo software that doesn't seem to work at the moment
thanx again everyone

1978 Porsche 928: There is no substitute!
Rufus and Rixter- what are your production numbers? Basically, what are the last four digits of your VIN numbers?
-There was a '78 on Ebay with 1500 miles last month; I bid on it, but obviously didn't get it- the owner wants upwards of $25k! Whoops...too rich for me!

I believe the front and rear spoilers work together to balance the car aerodynamically. Removing the front and not the rear may affect the balance and I would check this out before I got carried away.
Dave, I was thinkin some flat cragers and primer coat... kinda the wanna be muscle car look (NOT)
Normy, my vin# 9288100034 originally Geman vehicle brought to the US in May of 85, from the info I've been able to gather it's the 3rd oldest "Euro" in the hemisphere, #16 was last known to be in Nevada, #22? was in Virginia
Ron, after taking pics of the suspension when I got home I took a good long look at the spoiler and it looks like a factory job (was on the car when it arrived in US), it's so close to SITM that I'm not going to mess with it except to touch up the paint
thanks again folks will post more pics tomorrow and hopefully we can figure out this suspension deal, I also set the rear seats and console in (not bolted down) and will show pre/mid pics (the difference in how I got it and how it is now I hope will impress even the pickiest of you consider I'm only 3 months into the resto)
ya'll have a good one
