Hi all, I just purchased a bit of a basket case 928, has fresh paint, 5 speed, 1982. been off the road for about a year. Apparently it was running fine, just leaking oil so someone decided to take the engine apart. Based on some documentation I have compression was within 5% on all cylinders.
I have the complete gasket set and am looking for some guidance on building it back up. New main bearing shells? re-ring? The bores and crank visually look great.
Also what are some simple things I can do to increase performance, nothing crazy, it's the 4.5.
If compression is good in all cylinders and the bores look good then I'm not sure what benefit would come from re-ringing it. How many miles on the engine? If you can see the crank journals does that mean the pistons are out of the block?
Not a lot of performance options for the 4.5, other than to make it run the way it came from the factory. Some benefits to be had with a less restrictive exhaust, though it's a lot of work for the hp gain.

175k, yes pistons are out, surprisingly very clean for that amount of miles.
At 175K it's time to split the block and look at the main bearings, that's a lot of miles. Keep track of where the mains' and rod bearing shells came from and post some pics.

We are lucky to have Howard Wright at European Classics here in Atlanta. For My money he is the best 928 mechanic on the East Coast. Howard has serviced my car for the last 26 years.
Upcoming events that may be of interest to you are Werks at Amelia Island in early March. Sharks In The Mountains in Banner Elk NC in early June. Rendezvous 2023 Columbus Ohio third week in July. Links for information and hotel are on the Rendezvous Thread. In September Frenzy 2023 will be held in Sterling Virginia. I believe Greg's event is the longest consecutive 928 gathering ever held in the US. Lastly, Third Coast in Marble Falls Texas is Roger of 928's rus event. It's held usually the first weekend in November.

some pics of the mains, cleaned up the heads, a little corrosion on the same spot on each head. Must be a head gasket weak point. Bearings look worn out so they will be replaced, need to measure everything up. Cleaning up this thing sure is taking a while after 40 years and 175k!

I thought I had bought myself a project because mine is in need of a full timing belt service and all the rubber hoses need to be replaced. You have me beat by a long shot with the full engine tear down. I’m really curious to see how that all turns out. I hope you will be posting lots of progress pictures and stories. You’re definitely making me feel more brave about tackling my project.
I am excited to hear we have so many 928s right in the Tucker/Chamblee/Brookhaven area. Looking forward to seeing all these 928s on the road this spring!!

That's great! Lovely car. Admittedly I'm a little out of my league but so far everything has been fairly straightforward and not wallet crushing. There's a Porsche club meetup at a coffee shop near me, PERC (East Lake) once a month so hopefully at some point would like to make it there .
