Default correct tire sizes?

my 1985 with factory 16" wheels...wheels look to be the same front and rear... I wanted to know correct tire sizes... My rear tires look so thin... not sure if I can get wider tires? or maybe spacer can be used? the tires I have are..225/50zr16 on all 4 corners.
thanks

Noobie, here, my 1986.5 is in for much maintence and I'm going with stock 225/50x16 Conti Extreme Sport's, my reasoning is, I think the Porsche engineer's knew what they were doing, I'm not messing with spacers, I'm sure wider tires will look better in the back though.

225/50/16 is correct for 16x7 wheels. You should have 21mm spaces for the rear that push the wheels out to fill the wells.

You can go to 245/45/16 in the rear if you have the wider (8") manhole wheels from an 87 or later car.

I have owned 3, 86.5 Australian delivered 928s and all were fitted with 21mm rear spacers from the factory.
M415 - Widening of the Gauge on the Track of Rear Axle (21mm spacers, extended wheel studs)

I had suggested 25 mm above, but I think you are right at 21mm, not 25mm as i said.

I may have spacers but the manholes are 7" all the way around, I stand corrected I must have spacers because my window stickers does say " Widening of the Gauge on the Track of Rear Axle " standard no option.

7" is what they came with in 85. In 87 they increased the rears to 8", but those will fit the 85 if you can find them. I ran them for quite a while with no issues, as have others.

245/45R16 is very rare from the premium tire manufacturers. I think Pirelli has one for 350-400 $ each.

I have a set of staggered manholes with unworn but old bf Goodrich g-force tires that I could let go for a reasonable price, if interested.

Starting in USA 1987 & ROW 1987 all 928's were staggered wheels through the end of production. 16x7 front and 16x8 rear..however the 16" tires are becoming harder to find so upgrading to a 17" or even 18" wheel improves looks and handling for a minimal investment. With the right offsets you can run significantly larger tires all around easy. I ran the Porsche Cup 3's from 2006 base 911's that are quite popular..... 235/40-18 front and 265 up to 285 rear fit easy. On my race car I ran standard Porsche rear wheels of 18x10x65mm all around with 275/35-18's with fender rolling to fit....but thats a bit much front tire for a street car
